Er, sorry about that title :-p I am cooking some shanks today (I hope) slow stylee, however I do not have a Crock (pot) but just a big stainless pot. Can I still do it? All the recipes I've read say that I need a special Crock (pot) or similar but I don't have one. Is it THAT important? Will my shanks explode in a fit of pique if they aren't ensconced in Crock? Thanks for any help :chef:

You do not need a slow cooker. Use a heavy bottomed pot with a tight-fitting lid. Prepare the shanks and other ingredients on the stovetop then pop it into a 300 F oven to cook. They should be done in a couple of hours.

Thanks! tight fitting lid eh, to keep all the steam in? Hmmm, I might have to sit on mine until its' ready :-p

To keep the moisture in.

If your pot doesn't have a tight lid, cover the top of the pot with aluminum foil then put the lid on over the foil.

No need to sit on it. It's not meant to be a perfect seal, just minimize moisture loss.
