Do you make Subs (Hoagies, Heros, Grinders, etc) at home?

I enjoy making homemade subs. Thinking of making one tonight. Which made me wonder what you all put on yours and how you make them. Do you toast/bake the sub bun first, then add the ingredients? Or do you put everything on there and then stick it in the oven?

Or maybe you prefer yours cold.

What's your favorite homemade Submarine sandwich?

My favorite sub is an Italian cold cut sub with oregano, oil, pickles, onions, tomatoes and hot peppers. It's not convenient to go out and buy small amounts of so many meats and cheese for a sub or two so I don't make them at home.

However, we do make roast beef or meatball subs at home. SO likes French dip so that's easy. For hot subs we heat/toast the rolls. I like to pop mine under the broiler to melt the cheese.

Cuban sandwiches we make in our Griddler, using it as a panini press.

I normally have the stuff at home to make subs. Maybe not always all the different meats, but I typically keep ham and sliced swiss and/or provolone around for your average sandwich. I always have lettuce, onions and bell peppers, sometimes tomatoes, and I keep a big jar of banana peppers around as well. So most of the time I have something I can throw together to make a sub out of.

I'm not a huge fan of meatball subs, but my son likes them. So I've made them on occasion.
 
For the folks who don't want to eat so much bread, what's your reason. Yes, I'm nosy. Is it carbs? Sodium? Something else? Or some other reason?
For me it’s the carbs and spike in blood sugar.

I still buy a quarter sub from the local Wegman’s once in a while but it’s not the same as a full sized sub.

Now there are lots of low carb breads, wraps, and tortillas available but as Andy mentioned buying all of the various meats, cheese, vegetables, and condiments can be a considerable investment for a single sandwich.

I too am diabetic. And have tried the low carb breads and wraps. But I haven't found one that I like. The textures are spongey to me.

Really, though, bread isn't my biggest problem. It's pasta. And the low carb pastas (and even the whole grain types) are just blech!

I guess I’m Jenny Potatoes.

I love Italian subs made just like Andy does!! Salami, mortadella, procushte, provolone…

I think it’s a Boston thing.
 
We enjoy making subs, paninis, etc. at home. Meatball or Italian cold cut subs are great. I make a couple of types of paninis, but use my cast iron skillets as the press. I like making them at home because I can control the type of bread, meats, and other ingredients used.

I *wish* I could make a good French dip. I've never found a really good au jus to serve with it.

@jennyema Bread is good...but...potatoes....mmmmmmm
 
I rarely make subs/hoagies due to there being a Jersey Mike's ten minutes away, and I don't want to buy all the elements needed to make a sub like their Original Italian, Mike's Way.

I do make paninis and Cubanos on the Griddler, but most of my paninis are very simple, so I don't need to buy a bunch of stuff.
