Trust me, I have my share of failures, but the success make nicer pics lol.
I guess the biggest thing for me is the inconsistency. And goes with regular gardening too. You can do everything right, and still have a crappy year. Or just be lazy, and have a great year. thats the frustrating thing about gardening both shrooms and regular.

I remember years ago, I saw my neighbor walking towards me with this huge watermelon, like one you would get in the store. I said, Tom, I didnt know you had a garden. he said, I dont, we were just eating watermelon on the front stoop earlier in the year, and spit out the seeds, and a few plants took.

meanwhile, ive been trying to grow watermelon for decades , reading every article, watching every you tube video, and this guy spits out a seed and produces blue medal quality melons.

I saw a lot of this during covid, when people who never garner were having such good beginners luck.

either way, ill continue to keep reading, watching, taking notes, documenting just to make the following year better than the current one.

I must admit I'm a rather big "Beginners Luck" recipient!
First time I took up archery, our instructor was watching me and I knew that look. (Olympic Gold) I was consistently getting bullseyes with school equipment bows. But I knew within two lessons I would be barely even hitting the target. LOL.

First time growing Brussels - bumper crop - never to be repeated.
First time growing Snow Peas - bumper crop - never to be repeated.
and the list goes on...

I dont' mind failures - it happens and we go on. But you have to admit - to never make a comeback after the first bumper crop is a bit of a downer. Not exactly encouraging to continue, eh?

%100 with on that. its so frustrating. At the end of a season I'll usually make notes of what changes to make or just to do the same as I did the previous year ( due to bumper crop). too many variables. Ive just learned to do the best I can and deal with it.
ex. who the hell knew a groundhog would show up on in my garden and eat the bottom 2 feet of every vertically grown trellis crop I had ?
Ive learned that you solve one problem, and acquire another two ...
No such thing as a slam dunk, no worry crop.
I'll never forget what a run I had on garlic, then out of nowhere, I suffered a few years of them getting waterlogged. had to amend the soil several times, then eventually move the garlic to another bed to over come that.

live and learn

@dragnlaw, it matters that you tried!
If I put out the energy to plant 15 different things, many of them I have lots of experience with. Half my stuff goes to hell and the other half is great and Mother Nature and not me are the guiding forces. I'd like to take ALL the credit but Mother Nature is much more consistent at it, every year, every summer, every day.

This describes me as well. However, I will tell you that trellising my watermelon gave me much better results that letting them grow on the ground. I'll try it again this year....if it fails, it will be par for the course. Also, I did not sling the melons. I let them hang. They did not grow overly big, but were sweet!
