Hi - Our son, for Christmas, had two logs about 12"-14" long, shipped to us from a mushroom growing place. They are Shiitake mushrooms. Well, after following all the directions, we finally have shiitake mushrooms coming out of these two logs. It's quite a hoot watching how quickly they grow day by day. Has anyone else tried doing this and, if so, how well did it work for you? I looked at them in the produce dept. at our grocery store and, wow, they are super expensive, like around $3.00 an ounce :!: Well, would like to hear from any of you on this topic.

I've thought about it but never actually done it - sounds interesting!

Ours our $2.99 for a 3.5 ounce container or $6.99 per pound for the loose ones.

i did that in college years ago, but with a very different kind of mushroom 8) 8) .

i love shiitakes. it would be cool to try to grow your own. i think the cheapest you can find around me is about 7 or 8 bucks per pound for fresh ones. i usually buy dehydrated ones now from costco, about $10 for a pound so you get 3x as much, but they have a somewhat different taste when rehydrated.

I grew portobellas from a kit once, lots of fun! And tons of mushrooms!
