I just read a news article on NPRs website that said current turkey prices are up by as much as 40 percent over this time last year.

Has anyone made their turkey purchase? What was the price like?

I decided to go with a spiral ham this year. Cooking a turkey for myself, and maybe a neighbr or two, just knocks the feces out of me now. I placed an order with Omaha steaks and got a 2½ lb Duroc boneless country ham free-fer-nuthin. That order should pretty much hold me through the rest of the year, except for staples like bread, milk and soda pop.

I'm probably going to smoke a turkey breast. I can use the leftover meat for sandwiches and for turkey and sausage gumbo.

Winco was giving a turkey away if you spent $159 or something like that but they didn't start the giveaway till the 15th and by that time, I'd already bought all my food for the month. Well, most of it anyway. I sure wasn't going to spend that much money again in one store. I would have donated the turkey anyway. I'm not a Thanksgiving fan. I'm not really a fan of any holidays, come to think of it.

I remember when both of the grocery stores in my neighborhood would give you a free turkey if you spent $25. I would divide my shopping between Von's and Ralphs, which were just a block apart, and get two turkeys. Then we would have Thanksgiving in November and again in July. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday becuase there is no gift giving, no excessive spending, no religious connotations, and no expectations of anything but good food and good company. I love good food. Company I can take or leave.

I bought my parts turkey a week or two ago. Paid $0.59/Lb. I'll be getting the main meal turkey this week.

The local grocery had buy a 1/2 ham at $1.29/lb and get a free turkey, up to 12 lbs. A turkey is a bit much for two people, so we bought the ham and donated the turkey to the local food pantry. The turkey was listed at $1.69/lb.

I got my points for a free turkey. I'll pick it up on Friday and put in fridge to thaw. But here are the current prices for this week.

Store Brand (I think they used the same pic for fresh and frozen)

Butterballs are awesome. But yeah, they're too pricey for me. The Honeysuckle Whites are pretty decent.

We all gather at a family member's house for Thanksgiving, so I never have to worry about buying a turkey, although I'll still sometimes grab one (if it's affordable for me at the time) just to have at home. I'll roast it, then break the bird down and keep some of it for turkey sandwiches or just munching, then freeze the rest in portions to make meals from.

Got ours today, smallest we could find was 13.26 pounds. $0.49 per pound. Publix brand. Craig decided he wanted to smoke a whole turkey.

The butcher market has fresh, never frozen Amish turkeys for $1.49 per pound.

My wife doesn't care for turkey so I usually cook a prime rib roast however - with the price of beef these days I think I'll just cook up a couple of ribeye steaks and call it good.

Was that HEB. I saw a few people with both a ham and a turkey in their carts today.

I bought a Turkey Breast today, and plan on smoking it. What wood does Craig use? I have Post Oak and Apple pellets on hand, but can always get something else in plenty of time.

Only one year I raised Turkeys... that was the smallest size I had, barely 13 pounds... that same year I had one monster chicken that was 13.42 pounds. The woman who purchased it absolutely loved it and wanted me to do more like that for her. LOL - doesn't work that way.
