How do y'all make loose/patty hash browns?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that enjoys cooking.

IMO, the best hasbrowns and the ones made with dehydrated shredded potatoes. Ignore the directions on the package. Instead:

Place them in cold water in the fridge overnight. In the morning, drain and cook. This is how "hash houses" do it and frankly they are the gold standard for most of us.

Hash House? Please. I'm a notary and have my ethics.

Fries are not hash browns. They are a horse of a different ... nature.

Although I knew she didn't mean that, I admit I thought of that translation too. I've never heard family diners referred to that way either.

I like home fries, but they aren't quite the same as hashbrowns. When I used to make them for me and Stirling, I would sometimes ask, "Do you want round or square ones?" They are slightly different depending on if you slice or cube them.

I completely agree that home fries are not the same thing as hash browns. I love both of them equally, like children, although fried potatoes call more often than children (that's a joke, so stop typing).

I used to go to this place that did home fries, and they got to know me, and always made my home fries extra crispy. I went there every Tuesday, and so did Deion Sanders. I have no idea what he ate, and never cared (that's not a joke, so feel free to type).

I make these potatoes for breakfast or whenever. I guess most people call these home fries. Much easier than the shredded stuff. Cut potatoes (cubes or slices), microwave till just tender. Add butter, onions (sometimes any color bell pepper and/or mushrooms) to pan and cook till just tender. Throw potatoes in, season, turn up heat a bit and brown.

Ooooh yummy this is just like my mom did it. Delicious!

I did another batch of hash brown patties yesterday (kinda got shreds sort of on the last attempt)? And found that, both just squeezed and soaked and squeezed were lovely.

The main thing I found though, was the most effective way to drain them. A salad spinner is WONDERFUL for getting shreds dry. Like seriously, it's the best. I squeezed the HB for like 5 minutes in a towel then several layers of paper towel, and my wrists got sore. Then I took the salad spinner, spun for a minute, and got them at least twice as dry as the hash browns I squeezed. So if you have a 15 buck salad spinner like me and want hash browns, it's literally the best way I've found to dry them. I saved my wrists too!

The paler one is soaked then dried, whereas the darker one is again just squeezed dry. The very large patty was my attempt at loose hash browns.

Next I'll try buying frozen hash brown shreds and see how that works!!! You guys all recommend it, so I wanna try it too!

Have you tried dehydrating potato shreds to so this?

Been thinking about this line. When someone mentions Home Fries to me I don't think shredded. I think wedges, thick slices, stuff like that. Except where French Fries are deep fried, home fries are shallow pan fried.
Hash browns are yup, shredded and pan browned.

I went and looked and doesn't seem too hard.

Might be trying it once we get through the hot water issue.
Please let us know how it goes. That would be really convenient for me.

I can't eat potatoes all the time. Sometimes my arthritis is pickier about the nightshades. Sometimes I have been eating other nightshades, like tomato and more would put me into the "too much nightshade" zone that aggravates my arthritis. So, it can be tricky having enough potato at home without having them go off. I don't really have anywhere cool to store them other than the fridge, and that's a bit overcrowded, as is the freezer.
