How do y'all make loose/patty hash browns?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that enjoys cooking.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
taxlady: please explain how "potatoes" affect your arthritis, also never heard the term "nightshades"
i'm 68 and have arthritis and consume lots and lots of potatoes and never heard of the connection

I'll be happy to, when I have a few spare minutes. I think there might be a better place to post that than in this thread about how people make hashbrowns.
Here's a link to what I posted about nightshades and arthritis:

Interesting factoid:
Those dehydrated shredded potatoes are cooked before they are dried. They are also usually salted a bit. Both these things contribute to the awesome hashbrown end result. Try it - you might be surprised :)
Do you happen to know if those potatoes are cooked and then shredded or shredded and then cooked?

well i guess i have messed up big time , this afternoon i cooked some French fries and i didn't pay any attention as to what kind of potatoes they were ( they were white after i peeled them ) i didn't rinse or squeeze them , nor did i par fry them , i didn't check with the wife to find out what kind of oil we were using , i don't know the temp of the oil ( but it was hot , just put them in the oil and waited till they were nice and brown ,
:) as it turns out those were pretty good taters !!!!

i was just jerking everybody's chain trying to have a bit of fun
post # 64 was a joke so don't anyone get their feathers ruffled :)

Ever had an ear or brain worm? The past few days, all I seem to hear is Grandpa from the Simpsons saying, "We can't bust heads like we used to. But we have our ways. One trick is to tell stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I caught the ferry to Shelbyville. I needed a new heel for m'shoe. So I decided to go to Morganville, which is what they called Shelbyville in those days. So I tied an onion to my belt, which was the style at the time. Now, to take the ferry cost a nickel, and in those days, nickels had pictures of bumblebees on 'em. "Gimme five bees for a quarter," you'd say. Now where were we... oh yeah. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I didn't have any white onions, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big yellow ones..."

I need to try the dehydrated potato method. I might even spring for a white onion to add to them. Something new.

🤓😂. I'm literally in that process now (of cooking then freezing/fridging dehydrating the potatoes). I'll post pics when I'm done! I love the Simpsons!

I do not however, have an onion on my belt, sadly. 😢

Solved this problem years ago. Two words... Ore Ida. Yeah, it's cheating, but it works for me.

We like to use Simply Potatoes for hash browns but I am not above trying to make my own. I have done the shred and rinse and that has turned out pretty good.

I can't find any shredded potato, here in Greater Montreal, except stuff that is already made into hashbrown patties.

What's all this talk about dehydrated hash browns. Just buy frozen hash browns. With dehydrated potatoes, you are adding another step... or two steps. Hydrate them, and dry them.

With frozen hashbrowns, I get a bunch of weird ingredients that I really prefer not to have in my food. I can't seem to by frozen potato shreds here, so that's not an option. If I dehydrate the potatoes myself, there won't be any weird ingredients and they won't need to take space in the freezer.
