With many homes now having dedicated "Family Rooms" or "TV Rooms" all those living rooms are, like yours, rarely used anymore.
Growing up, we always had a living room and a family room. We kids were only allowed in the living room on special occasions.
The family room was where the TV was, and once we were teens, we had a pool table in the family room.
My last house (with the ex-wife) had a formal living room, family room, formal dining room, and eat in kitchen. Total waste of space, and fully furnished by Ethan Allan, so also a waste of money.
My current house has an eat-in kitchen -- no formal dining room. I made the loft into a home theater, and pre-wired everything for 7.1 Surround when the house was built.
