Home again in Ohio!
I've shopped at Aldi for decades. Over the years of food forum chat and things I've read online, I discovered a similar, but even better, European grocery chain - Lidl. They are just now opening stores along the east coast, and I'm hoping we can check one out later this year during our annual pilgrimage to FL beaches. (There's one in Rocky Mount, NC) Business Insider describes them as a cross between a Kroger and a Trader Joe's. At twice the size of the typical Aldi (but smaller than the usual U.S. grocery store), if there ever was one near where we live I could probably do all of my shopping there.

To see if there are any near you, the Lidl website lists all the new stores that are currently opening.

Hey GG, there's one opening in your neck of the woods! Road Trip! Lidl VA

Yup, yesterday some opened here in NC, their first US stores. There will be one opening closer to me later this year. I may check out the one a few towns over next week. I love Aldi and having Lidl too will be great!

Lidl is very common in The European Union and Spain. I love their natural Greek Yogurt .. It is sold by the Kilo in a big tub .. It is absolutely amazing ..

They also have European cheeses from 27 E.U. countries ..

If you have one near you, check it out .. And their prices are fair & reasonable in Spain ..

I am sure they will be similar as exporting bulk merchandise is alot cheaper Than exporting small amounts ..

The main hub is Germany and I am sure if they are opening supermarkets in the Usa, they will have a hub or main warehouse or warehouses ..

Have a lovely evening ..

We have two opening within a few miles of my home. From the looks of things less than a month from opening.

I will be interested in their product line.

I understood that they were two separate entities, owned by competing brothers(?) or cousins(?). When they were trying to divide the original business in Germany, one took Aldi and maintained it as it was, the other took the value in what they split and opened Trader Joe's in the U.S. At least that's what I remember reading online when Boston's Market Basket chain was going through it's own "it's mine - no, it's MINE" argument.

Same family, but different companies.

Where at in NC are you? Rumors are going around that we're going to have one here in EC but that's all it's been so far. :ermm:

I love their kids clothes, great value for money and it not all frilly for girls. I am so hoping I can get hold of their autumn rain gear this year, fleece lined and so durable.

If I had had more money and freezer space, I would have filled up the freezer with Turkish food this week but no, my freezer is full.

Bumping the thread because look what I found at LIdl! 16.75 pounds for $99. It comes with the stand and carving knife, and a best used by date for July next year. I have absolutely NO idea how good it is, but may break it out for New Years this year!

Not usually here either, @KatyCooks. I received an email saying "Here is $10 coupon because we miss you." I had not been in a while, so I took a look at their flyer and spotted them. It said, "Limited selection." I hopped in the car and drove up. They told me that they received six so far, so I bought one....and used my coupon!
Incredible! And quite the centrepiece for your NY gathering!

COSTCO has full Iberico ham legs with a nice stand and knife... but they are about 700 bucks.

I've seen those! In fact, we discussed whether to buy one for a huge family gathering. I've always wanted to try it. This one was obviously much more affordable. I hope it is tasty.

The only way I would buy one is if I had a huge gathering... and made everyone bring all the other food and beverages. :ROFLMAO:

I've never heard of Lidl, but we have an Aldi within driving distance, which I call the trap house of grocery stores. Yes, there might be some deals there, but any store that requires you to stick a quarter in their carts to "assure" that you'll return them it is your sign to run away. The staff and clientele are right on par with the most filthy Walmart and Dollar Tree stores in the area, of which you can imagine. No, thank you, I'll gladly pay double to avoid those places.

To the contrary, however, we have some local Mennonite discount grocery stores that are a bit of a drive, but that I'll take all day, and every day, including twice on Sundays, to shop at.

The problem I have with ALDI is that I can't get everything I need there, so I have to go to another store. There is an HEB a mile away from one ALDI near me, and a Kroger across the street from another. I can get anything I need at those stores... and HEB has much better quality and customer service.

I've wanted to have an "open house" type party on NYE for ages. I think it has given me a push to do it this year. Basically, come whenever during these times. Have a drink or three and some nibbles. Stay until midnight or go elsewhere. The last time I did this was decades ago, but it always went well. Perhaps it is time to do it again.

We have one Aldi that I avoid, but the other three near me are beautiful. Aldi is really a self-service place. The three I enjoy the most have people that are focused on stocking and maintaining the store. One is at the front to assist people in the check out. I like the quarter thing as carts are almost always returned rather than left scattered about the parking lot. My one hit on Aldi is as @caseydog mentioned in that it's options are often limited.

We have 8 Aldi stores within a 15 mile radius. There are two that are in upscale areas and they are large and quite nice. I have a lot of time, so I don't mind shopping at more than one store to get what I need (there are about 10 other grocery stores within 7 miles of my house).
