Morning breakfast fight

i'm not sure if i cook breakfast for me or my dog anymore ,
our little dog is getting a old so i give her a pill for her aging hips every morning but lately it been a fight , you see every morning lately i have been cooking biscuits 1 fried egg and 2 strips of thick bacon
the dog has learned not to get outa bed until she smells the bacon frying , what she is SUPPOSED to do is go to the door and i'll let her out to go do her business then come back , i'll let her back in the house and give her her medicine , finish cooking breakfast and i always save the last bite of bacon from each peice for her , now she will spit out the pill look at me like i have lost my damn mind if i think she is going to swallow that pill when she can smell bacon , so this is how it goes every morning me : pill 1st ...dog : bacon me pill ..dog bacon !!! this goes back and forth several times before she finally gives in a takes her pill , only then will i give her the bacon , and lord help us all should i cook waffles and sausage , she wants her bacon !!!......would you believe i have to cook her , her own strip of backon !!! but that how i start our day around here ......spoiled ass dog !!!

we give her greenies " hip and joint supplements " it helps her a lot , before she had reached a point where she could no longer jump up on the sofa, but after a week of taking these she jumps up there like a young pup been giving her one a day ever since

My mom's dog lives with me, and can barely go up the stairs. It's not her age or bad hips, she's just fat. Giving her a pill is easy, I just toss it on the floor. She will eat anything.

But psycho poodle (my avatar) didn't like to take pills, so I used the pill pockets. He liked the peanut butter flavored ones.

This method may not work with a smaller dog or a very skittish one.

Our friend, a former vet tech, told us to always give a treat after the pill. Mance needs two medications a day. He is so good at taking them, but is looking for the greenie or other treat before taking the pill and expects it to be given immediately after swallowing his meds down.

That's how we used to give our dog, sadly no longer with us, his pills, wrapping them in a soft cheese slice.

I used to use a bit of cheese, but found the Greenies pill pockets to be much less fuss on my part. They are shelf stable, so I'd just grab on out of the package, and he loved them. He didn't bother with chewing, as dogs tend to swallow small bites whole.

My mom's dog will eat anything (I'll leave it at that), so I can just toss a pill on the floor, and it is gone.

I also found they had a real nasty "package" smell which even my dog didn't like at first. I had to leave the pkg open a couple of days to get rid of the smell then close it up before they dried out.

LOL, just remembered - one of the dogs could even spit the pill out of those pill pockets... I didn't realize 'til I found the soggy pills on the floor later.

Pkgs might be good for temporary meds but not life long daily.

I think you are just in an argumentative mood now.

The chicken pill pockets smell kind of bad, but most dog foods/treats do. The peanut butter pill pockets don't smell bad, and Teddy loved them.

I generally hide pills in some peanut butter when I need to give dogs a pill. The thing with peanut butter is it seems once you get them to take it into their mouths it's almost impossible for them to spit the pill back out. Plus I've never met a dog that didn't love peanut butter. Get them used to taking it off your fingers and you're normally good to go. If you have to give pills often get them their own jar of cheap peanut butter. Even aging peanut butter seems to be fine to them.

Some elderly neighbors of mine from childhood had an Eskimo Spitz named Nikki. Nikki hated pills and they fought with her to get her daily med down her. That is until they had an epiphany. Nikki loved hot dogs. They started hiding her pill in a small piece of hot dog and the problem was solved. Not only that but she would remind them if they forgot to give her the hot dog with the pill on time!

Ease, convenience and I didn't have to stick my finger into my peanut butter to give him a pill. I could just put a pill in a pill pocket, and toss it on the floor for him. The pill pockets are not expensive -- I got them at Walmart -- and they lasted in the pantry for months.
