Following on from my previous question about the TEMU site, I find myself wondering “what do I actually NEED?”
The answer is NOTHING. I have all of the appliances that I won’t use. I have three sets of cutlery that I can choose from. I have every variation of storage bowl, everything in my big tool drawer from specialist cherry pitter to specialty cheese graters.
I think I’m just a kitchen hoarder.
I want aesthetic placemats.
I want delicate teacups when I serve tea
I want to scramble through the messy drawer when only a melon baller will do
I have a problem

But sometimes, I just feel that I could really lean into it.
I could quite happily become Hyancinth Bouquet with my hand painted periwinkles (look it up).
Currently, I’m searching thrift shops for those funky 70’s plateware, and always looking for nice uranium glass.
I have a problem

You MUST have every single piece in that pattern. Sometimes, gadgets and plateware simply sings to the heart. Celebrate those bougie tendencies! I definitely will celebrate with you!

Me? All of the time. However, my family wants nothing to do with china, sterling, silverplate, hand-painted items, and other family treasures. I tell them to simply use it. Good china? Use it every day. Sterling? Use it daily. Yes. Put it in the dishwasher. Mine go in and are in great shape. I admit to handwashing the hand painted items. However, it saddens me that my "treasures" that I use daily will one day end up in a thrift shop. Some of my things date back to the Civil War (or War between the States.) However, no one cares. :(

I do gift all the time.
Often I will gift to the thrift shop - I might buy a new coffee mug that I like, so then I will thrift out a few in my cupboard. I couldn’t tell you how many cake stands I have bought and lost. It’s a little bit weird - I make a birthday cake for a friend and take it to their house and everyone devours the cake, but it seems that the cake stand is regarded as part of the cake gift??

LOL, I learned early to say the stand is not included. I was not very socially adept much to my mother's chagrin. It would just never dawn on me that the plate should be returned.

But then I would never bring a gift on a platter or plate if it was important to me and I wanted back. At least certainly not without saying!

Or making something to put on said platter/plate to return it. Oatmeal cookies, for example.
OMG - YES, you just reminded me! One of my mother's rules.
If someone gifts you food, a casserole for example, you must always return their dish filled with something of your own, like cookies or brownies, etc.

My limiting factor is not money, it is space. I don't have space to store any more kitchen stuff, unless I get rid of some.

My mother took items from my grandmother's home when they sold it. My mother passed, my sister wanted nothing and so I took things from both houses. It has been pathetically slow in my progress of deciding what I will keep and what I will get rid of. I've made some progress. However, sometimes I cannot continue due to the back issue. Other times I can get caught up in emotions. It's progress....but slow progress. There are areas (attic and basement) that definitely give hoarder vibes.

This is a well known affliction that affects almost everyone involved in any kind of hobby or specialized endeavor.

It's called GAD. Gear Acquisition Disorder.

There is no known cure. Only self control will prevail.

I have a severe case of GAD that has been spreading since my 20's across every single hobby since then and I have the empty bank accounts to prove it. On the other hand, I have some pretty neat toys to play with.

I wish you all the best of luck battling this unbeatable foe.

So how do you feel about specialty coffee? Espresso? I can help you indulge your GAD with ideas on that.

:D

I've been down that road. Last espresso machine was an ECM. Want a coffee roaster? I've got one sitting on the shelf that I'll never use again. It's roasted at least #500 of greens. Replaced the gears once and the heater twice over the last decade.

The ECM had a catastrophic boiler meltdown. I was in my office when I heard a VERY LOUD BANG in the kitchen. I thought at first it was a gunshot. Walked into a kitchen filled with steam and water all over the floor. The boiler failure apparently cracked the rotary pump housing in the process. Sent the carcass to recycling.

Doc says too much coffee is bad for my ticker. I'm down to ONE cup of coffee/day. Probably contributes to my grumpy old man syndrome. :)

Oh yes, oh yes, no matter what the hobby/craft I just keep gathering.
Started innocently enough with sewing and just spread from there.

What's on everyone's list of past and current hobbies!

Sewing, painting (oil, acrylics, pencil, watercolor), horses, shooting, COOKING, egg carving. I've probably missed somethng.

When SO and I combined households some years ago we also combined our junk. A couple of times over the years I've offered my daughters their pick of stuff. I have no doubt when were dead, my kids will call 1-800-GOT-JUNK and clean the place out.
