Sometimes I feel like people on social media just wanna be cruel. (Story time/Am I the a-hole?)

In these situations I just try to remember one thing: This is the internet. IT AIN'T REAL! Some of the moderators in here should remember that.

...when you're a stranger
Faces look ugly when you're alone
Women seem wicked when you're unwanted
Streets are uneven when you're down

That song is now stuck in my head.

Tilt you head to the left, smack yourself on the right temple with the heel of your right hand, and it will fall out of your left ear. Pick it up and put it in the recycle bin.

the internet absolutely is real. there are real feeling and thinking people behind each screen name

I think that's the thing though. I don't think most people think/remember that they ARE real people (and I myself forget as well). To me, sometimes it's just a pixel, a bot, a nameless, faceless, robot, or whatever. Sometimes I just pause and wonder how I would respond if I were face to face with someone. That helps me to be more respectful.

That is no longer entirely true. There are plenty of screen names with a bot behind it. We have seen spam here that was undoubtedly posted by bots. (Thank you again to the staff here who got that stopped.)

But, the people we interact with on a regular basis on the internet are probably still all real people. I don't think the AI has gotten good enough that we wouldn't spot them as AI-bots after a few interactions.

It depends, are they laughing WITH you or AT you?
I've said before I have done and probably will do again, some really dumb and stupid things - so I don't mind being laughed at (if they're a friend). So whether they're laughing at me or with me, I don't care - as long as they're laughing!

I still don't think we should be rude.
By interacting with AI bots or spammers you are inviting/encouraging them to continue. If you suspect, ignore and don't reply. That is not being rude but cautious.
If you realize that they are the ones being rude in the first place by trying to bait, assuming ignorance in us, wasting space and time without contributing to the forum.

Absolutely in the cases we are talking about.

But there are times when it can be rude - but I'm not going to get into the whens and whys here.

It all comes down to the moderators.
If the moderators don't allow childish hurtful behavior, no one gets hurt and posts get removed.
If the moderators are enablers of childish hurtful behavior, people get hurt, people leave and the posts set an example for others the kind of hurtful behavior that IS allowed.
It's up to the moderators.
Leaving the forum and ignoring the behavior is all that adults can do.

True, but it's helpful if members bring to attention something a moderator may have miss.
True, but people don't like calling out a moderator. It's like a citizen calling out the king/queen/prince/warrior/president/leader.
Knowing yourself is required. Presenting yourself in the manner you wish to promote will help everyone follow along.

If no one is offended by the 'joke', it is comedy. If one person or a group of people are singled out and offended, that is not comedy.
