chicken..
1/2 kilo chicken breast.. bite size
1/2 tablespoon cornstarch
1/4 teaspoon soda powder [forgot the english name of this]
1/4 teasppon table salt
1 teaspoon oil

pasta..
one chopped onion
one small basket of button mushrooms sliced
3 garlic cloves, crushed
2 teaspoons turmeric
1.5 teaspoons grounded fennel seeds or some spice mix that has a lot of grounded fennel seeds
1/3 teaspoon grounded cumin
1/2 tablespoon sugar or a sweetener like sucarlose..
a bit less than 1/2 tablespoon table salt
1/4 grounded black pepper
1/4 cup olive oil.. [half of that added after the pasta is ready and cooled a bit. but in the original recipe she adds it all at once.. at the beginning of cooking..]
2 cups boiling water
500 grams small piecces of dried pasta like small shells

*heat oil over medium-high heat, and add onions and mushrooms along with some tiny bit of salt.. cook for 10 minutes stirring from time to time..
*in a bowl mix the chicken ingredients
*add chicken to the pot mixture and stir fry until the chicken is ready..
*add garlic and cook for a few moments. add the spices, sugar and salt and cook for additional few moments..
*add dried pasta and boiling water and mix well.. bring to boil.. reduce the heat to medium-low and cook 10 minutes.. with the lid closed..
*don't open the lid.. turn off the heat and let the liquid be absorbed for 10 more minutes..

i don't talk about ingredients. i mean to say that fancy food is lame.. especially for everyday eating.
i like simple foods because they are consoling..
 
Ok, that makes more sense. So you believe if a recipe is complicated and not something you could or would make it's not as good as this one pot boiled chicken and pasta dish, for example? Is that what you mean?

Also just for clarity for people to understand......what is a "basket" of mushrooms? That's not really an ingredient amount that most people would recognize?

Is it pasta with chicken? Because chicken pasta is not really Italian.

anyway it is my right to think what ever i want about pretentious fancy foods.
would you feel better if the recipe didn't included chicken?

Also, no, it had nothing to do with the chicken, it was the fact that once you cook the chicken you then boiled it for 10 minutes and suspect, you don't really see a problem with that or know what I'm talking about and we still don't know how much mushrooms you used. :)
 
@pictonguy I would say their 'basket' of mushrooms is pretty much the same as ours. Probably 227gr (8 oz), or maybe even 283 gr (10 oz). as they look like really nice fairly large mushrooms.
It helps to understand what he is trying to say by watching the video.
I think it's a translation thing, as she has only browned the chicken after 'velveting' them. Then adding the rest of the spices, the pasta and water to finish the one pot dish where it will also finish cooking the chicken.
I have dishes were I brown the chicken first and then add it, the rice, liquid and whatever and finish the dish in the oven.

By doing it this way, people will understand the changes you have made rather than trying to integrate the changes after - it is very confusing that way.

Dragn', I'm curious why you would expect an Israeli basket of mushrooms to be weighed in half pounds or ounces. They use metric. So, if similar to the common basket of field mushrooms sold here in Quebec, would be more like 250 grams of mushrooms. But, that is just a guess and S-T-B can probably weigh them and tell us.

yes, I know, so I didn't.
If you notice, metric was first. Then I put the ounces in, merely for our southern neighbours to be able to follow along without having to try and calculate.

I believe our mushrooms are most commonly found in containers of 228 gr. not 250 gr., no?

Yes, you wrote the amount in grams, but it isn't a round number. We sell mushrooms mostly in 227 gram boxes. That's half a pound. So, to me, I don't think of it as a metric container. It's just a half pound/8 ounce container with the metric equivalent written on it.

I hate that we have so many containers where the weight or volume is written in ml, but it's a half a pound or three pounds or a US pint. That one really bugs me. For a while there, we could buy cream in 500 ml or 1 litre cartons. Now, it's 1,000 ml and 473 ml. Grr

They are only supposed to write the weigh of the contents. They won't be precise, because mushrooms come in varying sizes. When stuff comes in packages with the weight on, they generally either know how much the container weighs and adjust or they tare the scale to zero after putting the container on and then weigh as contents are added.

The 500 gram containers I get are usually from Lufa Farms. Yes, I have weighed them. So far, all the ones I have weighed contained more than 500 grams of mushrooms.

So, which is it? Is 8 ounces or is it 10 ounces?
 
Did you watch the video taxy? Can you tell if it is 8 or 10 oz. - although in Israel I think it is metric, no?
No, I did not watch the video. I doubt I would be able to tell that in a video. Heck, I'm not sure I could tell for sure if I had just one of those in my hand. And yes, AFAIK, Israel uses metric, as I mentioned in a previous post.
