price of cauliflower has always been ridiculous up here. I rarely buy it any more. Think I said, a couple of years ago here, I refuse to even consider a recipe that mangles the cauliflower into an unrecognizable mush. If I am ging to pay that price I want to see it's what I paid for and look like what a paid for!

I agree totally! Soup bones were practically free! Suet same. When it comes right down to it even ground beef. Stewing beef same price as some lesser steaks.
We had a couple of places that just gave soup bones away. Not anymore!

@msmofet
The price of cauliflower is ridiculous now.
Now, I'm going to have to look at the price. Never paid attention to it before, as never thought it would be pricey. Thanks guys!

Down here, soup bones weren’t even named that. The butcher would hand out a bag if you asked, but they were “dog bones”. The immigrant community couldn’t believe this! They would gladly take a free bag of dog bones but usually didn’t have a dog? Of course, they were putting them into their delicious soups, stews and pasta sauces.
But, as always happens, the butchers and supermarket owners caught on. Now they became soup bones and had a price tag attached. Still very cheap, but then…

YES! I have seen this happen more than once. e.g. short ribs and skirt steak used to be reasonably priced.
This is SO true. Also offal! The price of liver has become insane.
Oxtails, beef shanks
Yup, yup! That too. Chicken feet have been more expensive than leg quarters.

Once, I saw a head of cauliflower for 9 bucks USD a head. Once, but wow.

Not any more! Poor puppies everywhere because they could still have the bones after soup is made!

Right now, not too bad. It was more around Thanksgiving.

Buy three!!!! and run!
At our local Fortinos, a big grocer here in Hamilton/Toronto area. Cauliflower $7.99. (hope that is really for 2 cause even for Fortinos that's a stretch!)
At another grocers No Frills, $3.99.
At Walmart, $3.47 (no stock)
Longos $8.09 ???
Sobey's not listed
Loblaws $5.99 (none near me)
Metro $4.99 (none near me)
Freshco not listed
Food Basics $3.98

So they have really come down in price as 6$ was pretty common a while ago.

When I lived in the country, the local supermarket gave away dog bones and sold soup bones for cheap. The bones for the dogs had sometimes fallen on the floor or might have been from a day or three ago. So, if they were for human consumption, it really was a good idea to get the soup bones.

The meat was sold at dedicated butcher station. They even broke down whole carcasses there.

Yes. They were a lot more a month ago..

Actually it could be due to the fact it is extremely popular and perhaps not that many farmers actually grow it. That would make it more pricey plus, not to mention, the very fact it is so popular and people are willing to pay for it.

I think it's definitely the demand, since it got the reputation of being a super food. I would have thought that people would have quit being willing to pay that much for kale by now. I imagine it will go back to a a more normal price compared to other cabbage.

I find some recipes really annoying. I was looking at one that wanted me to make a salad using mostly kale. And since kale is kind of rough, I would have had to spend time massaging the kale to make it more palatable in a salad. That might make sense if kale was dirt cheap, but I'm not paying extra just to put in more effort.
