What is shortening

I am based in Australia and so far have not found any equivalent to shortening. Several recipes call for it so I either need a substitute or be pointed in the direction of the Australian equivalent
 
I was making "slippery dumplings" that called for shortening. I sustituted butter and they came out great, but I don't think that would work for everything.
 
shortening is for the most part interchangeable with butter. One if just a fat from an animal and the other is just fats from plants.
 
Superchef, I'm sure you have lard there. Lard works well for shortening. What is it you are subbing it in?
