What's for Dinner - Sunday February 8, 2026?

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that enjoys cooking.

I was back late at 7pm with bags of shopping, nothing left to give energy wise and having had nothing to eat all day (busy), so I was very hungry.
I needed something FAST.

As instant noodles go I think these are a winner, nice flavours and texture for 5 minutes effort.

Before the sweet, salty, hot joy got slapped on

and after. I have to confess I had two reloads on the sauce 😂

Got some asparagus spears (about 5) and a vegetable peeler and peeled the asparagus into thin strips.
Then placed them under the noodles and added the boiling water and sachet thing on top (nice broth would be better).

While they were doing the do (they take three minutes) in a small glass I mixed a bit of soy sauce, sriracha, honey and peanut butter and a small amount of chilli flakes. Drizzled (slapped) it on top.

That’s all there is to it. The asparagus is so thin the small amount of time and heat in the noodles is perfect. Yum yum.

We had a dozen people over last night. I made a giant pot of chili and smoked a rack of ribs, followed by chicken wings done with Old Bay seasoning and also Frank's Red Hot, and also pig shots. Mrs. GH made cornbread, buffalo chicken dip, and loaded baked potatoes. On top of all that, my aunt and uncle showed up with a "Big Mac Pizza" that some mom and pop shop near them makes. They also brought a cheese and venison bologna platter. Good grief, we had more food than we knew what to do with. EVERYONE went home with leftovers, and we still won't need to cook for the next few days.

Well that puts my slapdash noodles into perspective 😂

I didn’t actually know it was a religious thing until I was quite old.
Where I grew up we called it ‘Fish n Chips Friday’ which tbh very, very rarely happened in our house because my mother was sucked into the whole low fat, low salt approach to things.

I remember the first time I ate at a friends house and their mum must of seasoned the food they cooked (as any normal person would), I was blown away and thought she must be some kind of super chef 😂

Had a few Melba toasts with Cretons on and while some "Lightly Coated" Calamari (tubes and tentacles) baked in the oven. Had with Sweet Chili Dip and Korean Dipping Sauce. Surprisingly good!

I'm impressed  got the Calamari at Giant Tiger. (funny only to Canadians)
Didn't even remember I had taken a picture. Although delish as is I might cook up some rice for the next serving with a sauce of some sort.

My sister lives an hour north of Chicago. Most taverns and many restaurants have fish fries on Friday. I miss not having that here!!!

On Superbowl Sunday, even though neither of us had a team playing, Frank made corndogs and tots using Vienna beef franks.

Whoa!
Frank outdid himself! :ROFLMAO:

Friday fish fries. Very common growing up.
Probably started as a lent thing, or a reason to make fish for a change of pace, so might as well be Friday.

Some places I used to go had an all you could eat.
And others, a piece of fish that was too big for the plate. Good meals and good times.
Including the home dinners featuring fish.

He did! He made that batter from scratch. It really was yummy!!!

All of the above on the fish fries.

When I was a kid, Friday's were no-meat days for Catholics.

Yes, that is how I understood it and that was the reason I was given as to why they usually had fish. And no, we did not call it Fish Friday, just meatless for Catholics.
I believe the term Fish Friday was used in school because that was generally served that day. Many kids who didn't like the Fish choice made sure to pack their lunches that day!
"It's Friday so it's Fish Day"

Yeah, something like that.
I know the school cafeteria always had their fish sandwiches on Fridays, too. Every week.
Maybe it was more than just lent. Or maybe my family only followed it on lent.

I was raised Catholic, but it's not exactly like we were practicing Catholics. Not after I was confirmed.

My junior high cafeteria made the best fish sandwiches. Actually, that cafeteria made most everything themselves, and the food was really good. This was days prior to the pizza squares, etc. The ladies who worked there were sassy and made such good food.

Oh, you have fish Fridays, too? :)
Even though the church started allowing catholics to eat meat on Fridays 60 years ago, in my home town of Niagara Falls, every restaurant, coffee shop, bar and grill and greasy spoon, still to this day, offer what they call a fish fry, a.k.a. fish and chips, on Fridays, and ONLY Fridays!

Christmas Eve supper is definitely an all-fish meal but mainly in the South. It has really become just an excuse for eating delicious, lavish fish dishes which we wouldn't cook any other time of the year as most of them are so elaborate and time-consuming, and very expensive. 😃
