I just bought a whole raw chicken at the grocery store today, but when I took it out of the packaging to cook it, I noticed a bright green streak near one of the legs. It does not wash off, but the chicken smells fine. What could that be, and is the chicken still safe to eat?

Does it look like a dye perhaps? Is it way down by the end of the drumstick? It is possible the legs were bound with something that bled onto the skin.

Take it back if you're not sure. Supermarkets don't bat an eye when it comes to such returns or exchanges.

It could be a dye. That's what I was thinking it might be. It's on top of the skin, not really inside, but I took it back just to be safe. Thanks for your input! I appreciate it!

Now I know where the Army got all those green scrambled eggs they fed us...
