TRUTH !!
Someone with bowed or crooked legs in ancient Rome would have been called a prevaricator. The word literally meant "to straddle," as in straddling a horse, a practice that can make a person bowlegged.
Since those who's legs weren't straight sometimes couldn't walk straight, the term was eventually used in a figurative sense to refer to someone who couldn't walk a straight line in word or deed. Today, the word means "one who deviates from the truth."
