Yeah, MRE's aren't pretty. And I'm not surprised. I've got a friend that works with this, and a lot of work goes into it, not like a normal recipe. Has to be stable under various awful conditions, reheated easy, and taste the same? I camp quite a bit, so I am conversant with what is going on with portable rations. Generally US army rations have been tried BTW at several scout camps. They do tend to go for the 'reheatable liquid included' package other than a dehydrated (which I think gives better meals but requires boiling water, aka a separate heat source)

Damn, and I thought those looked rather ugly.

Did you have to eat this monstosity?

Rations of Soviet and Russian Forces during the Cold War-Part 2

I was close to making a project of recreating soviet army rations for my Russian friends, but with better ingredients and, well just OK. I doubt that is a useful project, they are really awful, sorry you had to eat that. I mean I could with those ingredients make something nice , but it is mostly something I'd shudder even to look at. I get your dislike of barley.

King Arthur's First Clear is NOT certified Kosher. Heartland Mills Golden Buffalo is supposed to be Kosher and similar to a first clear flour.

Hi Charlie. Yes I'm on the east end of Long Island. Only about 45 cm of snow accumulation here. The American public is largely a collection of pansies, crybabies, and girlymen. No problem with the snow except for the salt they put on the roads that rusts the cars. How's your 7 quart KitchenAid treating you? Mine certainly makes kneading bread dough a lot easier. Cooked a piece of beef eye round that I corned for 23 days. Had a sample for breakfast. It was quite tasty. I'm looking forward to eating the rest of the spiced corned beef with home made rye bread tonight for supper.
    Good hearing from you- Bill

It certainly looked like it was doing the job. Good action shot of your pancakes cooking.

Yes, the old "molleggiato" is still quite popular. By the way, I hate the guy...
