Yu Xiang Ji Si (Chinese Spicy Chicken Slivers)

Thanks; glad it's helpful. I personally enjoy cookbooks, or recipes, written by people who can teach, so that you don't just get a recipe but grow as a cook. I have to be careful, though, or I can go on ad infinitum. Just now in re-reading the recipe I wrote, I was tempted to add two comments...

Yu Xiang Ji Si (Chinese Spicy Chicken Slivers)

I know what you mean; I lived in Shanghai for five years, and that was the main beef I had with the cooking (besides sometimes being a shade bland for my taste) - it was unnecessarily (imho) sweet. But there are some outstanding local specialties that I still miss though I left there long ago...

Yu Xiang Ji Si (Chinese Spicy Chicken Slivers)

I ate this delicious dish a lot when I lived in China. Somehow I left without ever getting the recipe. Neither of my Chinese cookbooks have one, and I have not been able to find a decent recipe on the web. Working with the one recipe available online (in which the proportions are way off) and my...

    9/11 5th Anniversary

9/11, horror of evil though it was, was a polarizing event...it drew most of the world together (while the Palestinians danced on the streets and handed out candy.) It certainly drew Americans together. One of the memories that stays with me is the incredible solidarity of Americans in the...

I'm in heaven...plum pie and fresh whipped cream (found the cream in the fridge) and a nice cup of tea! Oops...Oh, sorry to you folks that didn't get to taste it....it was so good I didn't pay attention to how many pieces I kept slivering off for myself... Oh well...no need to put the...

Sorry, Snoop, for not responding to your question about biscuits and gravy. In the U.S., biscuits are not cookies. They're a quick roll made with baking soda, not too distant from a scone, but no sugar. In the South (I'm from the North, so I'm not speaking from personal experience), they are...

All right...I'm reading this, so I'll pitch in. But don't let's get stressed. Someone very wise once wrote, "You know.... we all get caught up in things we shouldnt. Mainly stress. I feel we need to just relax. Take a deep ****ing breath....... and relax. Life is too short. Sure, there are...

Different Meat and Vegetable Combinations in Dumplings?

I lived in China for 11 years and learned some Chinese cooking while there. Dumplings of various sorts are found all over China. The ones we call potstickers, if made at home in the North, are the exact same as jiaozi, the water boiled ones. It does just depend, as one poster said, on how you...
