South African of Irish, Scottish, French, British, Rhodesian ancestry - a real human mongrel, actually. I'm a keen amateur cook (since picking up a copy of Elizabeth David's French Provincial Cookbook as a teenager). I am interested in food history, how food & cooking has shaped human life through the ages & food etymology. I have been fortunate enough to travel the world for the past four decades & have managed to eat & drink some really interesting stuff along the way. My food knowledge is pretty good (but I am not an "expert" - who is, really?). My cooking skills are around 5.5 out of 10, but to this day I am incapable of frying an egg without breaking it! I am especially interested in French food (but not haute cuisine or the late, unlamented nouvelle cuisine). Other food interests include any kind of rustic, honest, country food, American food (particularly the food of New England, the South, Creole & Cajun), the bold flavours (sorry - flavors :)) of Spanish & Portuguese food & M
