    I want a cutting/carving board

About 40 years ago when my wife and I were setting up housekeeping, we were given a wood carving board. It was large enough for roasts and a turkey. It had a juice ring around it that caught all the juices, a little reservoir at the end for the excess juice and it had 4 little spikes on the...

    What are pastry spices?

OK, thanks guys. I talked to my wife and I think we're going to make a batch without the "pastry spices" and see what it tastes like. But Kayelle had a great deduction that maybe it should have been 4 tbs. Meanwhile, I'm going to contact McCormick and see what they have to say. Once I get...

    What are pastry spices?

Pastry Spices? Well, the recipe says: 4 tsp pastry spices 2 1/2 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp nutmeg 1 1/2 tsp coriander 1 1/2 tsp cardiman 1 1/2 tsp soda 1 1/2 tsp salt 1 tsp allspice 1/3 tsp cloves 1/2 tsp ginger The way it's written, I am making the assumption that at one time, there was a product...

    What are pastry spices?

OK I need some help from some senior citizens out there. In my mom's recipe book, there's a recipe for Mrs. Wyre's Speculaas, a spice cookie. It includes: Shortening brown sugar almonds flour cinnamon nutmeg coriander cardiman soda salt allspice cloves ginger and the tricky one: pastry...

    Pastry Spices

I found a recipe for a Dutch cookie called Speculaas. My mom used to make it all the time. One ingredient is called "Pastry Spices." I think it was something that mom bought as a mixture. Does anyone have a clue what it is and if it is still available? This would have been in the time...

    Mother's Cookies is back! Yippee!!!

It may only be marketed in the West. It was headquartered in Oakland California and sold as far East as Utah. It went out of business last year and the brand was picked up by Kelloggs. Maybe they'll take the brand national now.

    Mother's Cookies is back! Yippee!!!

Well, I like making my own cookies as well, but in the world of "store bought" cookies, I've always preferred Mother's. Besides, they were the locally made cookie.

    Mother's Cookies is back! Yippee!!!

My daughter went to the local Safeway today and brought home some Mother's iced oatmeal cookies. Yum! They're back, made by K, the corn flake people. Now the cookie aisle won't look so depressing. Mother's cookies started in Oakland California in 1914 and abruptly shut down last year. I...

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

I remember Farrel's, but I don't remember going there. In the '70s, the kids were babies and my career was taking off, so we didn't go out much. There was another Ice Cream Parlour in the Fremont Hub, but it closed years ago. Meanwhile, we're stuck with Baskin-Robbins. But their sundae's are...

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

OK, a couple of comments here. We don't have any "Ice Cream Parlors" here in town, so I can't really address that. Some of the fancier restaurants with the red velvet wall paper and the snooty wait staff and the recommendations of the so-called "travel writers" don't live up to the...

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

Well, in 2006, us empty nesters took a 9000 mile road trip back east to New England on US 2. It was a blue highway trip all the way until Salt Lake City on the way home and we were tired, so we took I-80 the rest of the way. We ate great food all the way, from little cafes in Bonners Ferry ID...

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

Good eats long gone. Casper's Hot Dogs are still around, mostly in strip centers and are pretty good. Doggie Diner is long gone, but there are a few Doggie Heads in various locations around the bay. Mostly in private collections. There was a flap a couple of years ago in the City when...

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

"Tuesday is Red's Tamales Day." I think this must have been a local Oakland product. Another great slogan is for Blue Diamond Almonds (Central California Almond Growers Coop) "A can a week, that's all we ask."

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

And a great slogan it was. Every so often, I'll mention "Red's Tamales Day" to somebody (on a Tuesday of course) and enjoy watching the blank stares.

    Does anyone remember "Red's Tamales?"

Red's Tamales and change of subject Didn't taste like real tamales, eh? Well, wadda expect for a nickel? Now, in the previous couple of posts was a mention of the "Ye Olde Pizza Joynt" in San Lorenzo. They had a fire a couple of years ago - or maybe more. Now the place is an...
