My Other, Other Hobby "Have To See"

I like the Marlin 60. I have the cheap "dime store" version, a 1972-vintage Glenfield Model 60 that I bought in a Rose's department store for, if I remember correctly, $35.00 If I had anywhere to shoot it I'd put a real scope on it. It's simple, reliable, and even looks pretty good since...

    All natural?

The local Food Lion store advertised St. Louis cut spares for $2.49 per pound this week, so I went to the store to get some. I should have known better - in spite of "All Natural" on the label, there was also (in much smaller print) a note that the ribs were "enhanced" (or adulterated...

Poor customer service with Rock's BBQ

I too have an early Stoker (they tell me it is one of the first ten they ever built) and I recently attempted to update the firmware. My anti-virus software kicked in right in the middle of the process, "bricking" the Stoker. Rock's fixed it for their standard $12 upgrade fee, even though...

Nice rack! (Well, somebody had to say it.) ;)

    My first post...picnic shoulder

That really looks good. I have only cooked picnics a couple of times (when they were on sale for 99 cents/lb and butts were not). I may have to try that suggestion of cooking the skin - I was halfway tempted to try to make fried pork rinds with it, but didn't.

    BBQ NOOB first boston butt

Wrapping in a towel would just add a little more insulation while it's resting in the cooler - there's nothing special about a towel. I have a mid-size Playmate cooler that will hold two cooked butts easily, and I normally wrap the butts in foil, put some newspaper inside the cooler (more...

I guess that trumps my colony of chipmunks.

He'll be wanting his own smoker before you know it.

    Thinking of getting a smoker.

This ^^ I've had one for several years and I really like it. I'm tempted, though, to try building a UDS.

Pork butts 0.99 per lb, Food Lion

Food Lion in the Winston-Salem, NC area has butts for 0.99 per pound. They are "enhanced" with 8% added pork broth (whatever that is (cough - water - cough)) but for that price I was willing to overlook it.

    Fricassée de Lapin

That looks good. I may have to build a box trap and harvest a couple of those cottontails that live in the meadow behind my house. :D

    Electric Smokers

I've had a WSM for several years, and rarely have to add coals for a 12-hour cook. No, it's not really set it and forget it, but it comes close. If you know somebody with a WSM, see if they'll let you borrow it to try cooking a couple of pork butts. That will give you a much better picture of...

Pecan tree vs high winds at the inlaws house

Sorry your in-laws lost such a nice tree, but I know you'll make the best of it. My sister-in-law has 4 or 5 pecan trees that look like they're a hundred years old, and they ain't going nowhere. And they never trim them, so I get nothing. :|
