    Too much salt

I'll get my father to do it. He's a Nuclear Physicist, I'm just a lowly computer programmer!

    Too much salt

Very true though the placebo effect can work both ways. I'm always reluctant to ascribe things to the placebo affect without convincing evidence though because a lot of people get insulted by it. BTW: Just thought I'd mention that I believe almost all (if not all) spices, other than salt, are...

    Too much salt

If there's anything to the theory (and I readily admit there probably isn't), my guess would be that most spices have a larger molecular structure that can't penetrate the potatoes (or at least, not as well)....though I have no idea how to verify or repudiate that. Personally, I'm with you...

How long does it take to dissolve saffron threads in milk?

Thanks for the replies! After over an hour it did actually dissolve most of the threads though there was still some particulate matter left over. It sounds like I don't need to go that far though, so next time I'll take you guys' advice. Thanks again!

    Too much salt

Not sure I believe the "debunking" of this OWT. I'm not entirely convinced that the article you cited by Mr. Wolke is correct. First of all, he didn't mention having done a taste test of the water (he taste tested the potatoes). Second, his theory is that the potato absorbs salted water...

How long does it take to dissolve saffron threads in milk?

When you dissolve it, do you heat the milk to boiling? Or close to it? It seems like 2 Tbsp is too small an amount to heat in a pan. Maybe I should make a little extra and save it for later? I don't suppose it could have anything to do with the fact that I live at high altitude where the...

How long does it take to dissolve saffron threads in milk?

Ok, so it was a silly question! It sure was a surprise and a royal pain in the .... you know what ... though! They finally all dissolved but it took over an hour (about 1 hour 10 minutes I think) and I constantly stirred them and nuked them every few minutes for 10 - 15 seconds to...

How long does it take to dissolve saffron threads in milk?

I'm trying to follow an Indian recipe for Lucknow Mixed Vegetable Biryani (Indian) from the Cookbook "The Dance of Spices: Classic Indian Cooking For Today's Home Kitchen" (A GREAT cookbook BTW!). The last step is to dissolve 1/4 tsp saffron threads in 2 Tbsp warm milk. I've only used saffron...

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

 Yes, it is. I don't know exactly where it came from. A friend posted it as a comment on my MySpace page and I don't know where she got it from. For some reason, I find it the funniest picture I've ever seen.

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

Salsa Verde Salsa Verde (Green Chile or Green Tomatillo Salsa) I'll post this recipe as I got it from the web and then tell you the modifications that I made. Ingredients 1. 2 large Anaheim Peppers (Chilies) 2. ½ pound Tomatillos (husked, rinsed, diced) 3. 1 ½ cup low-salt chicken broth (I...

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

Well, I'm still experimenting but I guess I could give it a try. With the Chile Rellenos I looked up 5 or 6 different recipes on the web and combined them and took parts from one and parts from another. Some of them had ingredients I liked better while some had better instructions for various...

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

I went to the largest grocery store in Boulder, CO and found some Tomatillos. No fresh ones, but they had canned in the Mexican (ethnic) section. So I made a Salsa Verde with Tomatillos. I looked at the ingredients of the green chile salsas I've tried from the store and none of them had...

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

I've looked all over the store I usually go to and couldn't find them either in the fresh produce section or the ethnic section. I think I'll just look around in some of the other stores. Skye.

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

Thanks for the help I tried to post this yesterday but couldn't get to the site. I just wanted to thank you all for your help and let you know that it helped. I did the Chile Rellenos Saturday night. I think the batter still wasn't quite right (a little too thin) but the eggs whipped fine...

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

The really weird thing is that even though she's somewhere around 73 (I haven't asked her age!), she knows even less about cooking than I do. Her explanation is that her daughters have always done the cooking. I haven't gotten around to asking her what she did when they were little though.

And of course I meant MIL, not MOL. *sigh*

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

Thanks for all the advice everybody. I'll give it another try this weekend. As for the MOL, sorry, I didn't mean Mother in Law, I meant StepMother. My father's new wife. It's strange thinking of my father with a new wife. They were married for 52 years before my mother died.

Hi, Cooking NewB - How to beat egg whites

Hi, Just thought I would introduce myself. I'm a 49-year-old man...divorced...and wanting to learn more about cooking. I have certain talents but know very little about real cooking. I can usually toss in ingredients without measuring them and guess at what the ingredients should be. But I...
