    Slow cookers on timers?

I worked at home for 20 years so I was always there to start a crockpot meal whenever it needed starting. I'm gone from the house now from 5am to 5:30 pm and my family is missing some of the crockpot meals I used to make. Most of my recipes require cooking for between 6 and 8 hours so I can't...

Need a new pan for my sauce

I have mostly cheap cookware and I make do. I have a non-stick skillet I use for making this great "pink sauce" for chicken and pasta that my family loves. It's about time to toss the thing and I want to get a better pan for the job. I want to eventually get some cast iron stuff but I assume...

    Slow cooker lunch?

I work at home and I love a hot lunch. During the cold months I make soup every weekend and eat it all week for lunch. I'm pretty much done making soup for awhile and I'm looking for ideas. All my slow cooker lunch meals involve hot dogs - I make chili dogs or 'kraut dogs and right now I have...

Please help me with this pot roast

My sister in-law makes this great pot roast.... well, it's really just beef chunks and gravy she serves over mashed potatoes. For years, when we go to her house for parties she's served this and we love it. Last week we were there and my wife asked her how to make it. All she does is put a...

    Can I thicken my marinara?

I make a simple marinara using canned whole tomatoes. I use a potato masher on them and then - because my family likes smooth sauce - i use an immersion blender when it's done simmering. We all love the sauce but I wish it could be a litter thicker. Is there anything I can do to thicken the...

What to do with this blue hubbard squash?

I was just given a huge blue hubbard squash. I am the only person in my house that eats squash so I'd like to freeze it in single servings. I was going to cook it then mash it with some s&p and butter. Can I freeze it like this or would I just cook and freeze? I'd appreciate any suggestions...

Melt In Your Mouth Meat Loaf Recipe

Well, I've made this twice so far. It's great! My kids love it but my wife is on the fence... she really doesn't care for the onion flavor from the soup mix. Is there another mix that will add good flavor with less onion taste?

    Freezing my hamburgers

Thanks everyone for the replies! I ended up making and seasoning the patties then wrapping 2 at a time in saran wrap then put them into freezer ziplocs. I took out 4 patties several days later and they unwrapped perfectly - no sticking! Tossed them on the grill and they were great.

What did your parents do for Budget Friendly Meals?

I loved almost everything my mother ever cooked. It wasn't until I was grown that I found out most of it was really cheap - after all, she did have to feed 5 kids. we often had things like hamburg and gravy over rice, sliced hot dogs and french fries, canned salmon with cubed potatoes and peas...

    Freezing my hamburgers

We buy like 10+ pounds of hamburger at a time, seperate into 1.5 pound sections and freeze. We use it for lots of stuff but I do make burger patties regularly. Mine are pretty simple: mix wishbone italian dressing into the meat, make the 1/4 lb patty in my press and season both sides with Dizzy...

Fast and easy American chop suey

I don't think I've ever shared a recipe here... I've been waiting to become a better cook first  My wife used to make this back when she did most of the cooking. Anything she made was always super simple because she hates to cook. I made this last night because I needed something...

Is this a good wireless thermometer?

clickety I have a thermapen and love it but I really want a probe that stays in the meat for doing roasts, turkeys and larger items. I liked the looks of this one because you can use it on 2 things at once - even if one is outside on the big green egg and the other is inside in the oven! My...

Please help me improve my chili

OK, my chili is simmering. The changes I made: Well, I chopped up a few cloves of garlic and sauteed them with my chopped up onion. I used to use no garlic and I just dropped my onion right into the pot. I drained the juices off from the canned beans. I added 1/2 tsp of smoked paprika...

Please help me improve my chili

I have a question: I love garlic and would definitely like to add some... I will chop it up in my garlic zoom. Should I saute it in the skillet with some oil then put the ground beef in there with it? Or should I just put it in there with the other ingredients when I mix everything together?
