Stones not specifically made for food?

Thanks everyone. Lead wasn't my only concern. It was just an example. I would like to hear more in this topic. It's very interesting. Sounds like you really need to know what you are doing if you use something other than stones intended for cooking.

Stones not specifically made for food?

I have seen many use stoneware that is intended for other purposes than food. For example, kiln shelves for pizza. Is this safe? How do you know if the stone you use as an alternative is safe or lead free so that it can be used with food?

What to do about a wobbly skillet?

Great idea about the pizza! I can use it in the house for pizza.

What to do about a wobbly skillet?

Yeah I won't be buying new when it comes to CI. I prefer the smooth finish of the old pans. I will probably just hold out hope of finding another one at a thrift store or garage sale. eBay works but they are expensive there.

What to do about a wobbly skillet?

I am thinking that may be the answer. Too bad too. Such a nice pan.

What to do about a wobbly skillet?

As far as I have read the reasoning behind this is that the manufacturer doesn't want you calling them up complaining that you scratched or broke your range so they simply tell you not to use it. Honestly this was a hand me down range and so much better than the ugly burners we had and super...

What to do about a wobbly skillet?

I have this old Wagner skillet which I love for the size. It a 12" skillet. The problem is the bottom is not flat. This didn't really make a difference when I had my other stove but now that I have a glass top stove it may have to be relegated to a camping only skillet. Can anything be done...

    Stripping Cast Iron

Nope. Just a charcoal. I have done it in the campfire before. I love the results from that. We prefer the charcoal grill because we prefer the flavour of the finished product.

    Stripping Cast Iron

I would have loved that but I don't have one nor does anyone I asked. I am going to ask further though. I have another pan that needs to be stripped.

    Stripping Cast Iron

If you can see this it's the eBay auction I won this from. Vintage 10 1 2" Cast Iron Chicken Fryer 8 on The Handle | eBay Not sure if that'll show up. It shows great before pictures.

    Stripping Cast Iron

All done and seasoned-at least for now. Of course I will need to build up the seasoning but it looks awesome. So happy with it!

    Stripping Cast Iron

I wish I'd taken a before picture of how built up this pan way. Anyway, it is now in the oven for its first round of seasoning. Yay! I can't wait to use it. I will post a pic once it is seasoned. It looks great!

Getting fresh pizza onto the stone

Eh probably not the "proper" way but cooking the crust first makes it easier to get it back on the stone.

Getting fresh pizza onto the stone

Wow! I must be really wrong. No store bought by the way. I heat up the stone. My big one is a pampered chef stone so on the thinner side. I cook my dough first, take it out, build my pizza, and back in the oven for 15 minutes. Crust is crispy and good IMO and my families opinion. I guess I will...

Getting fresh pizza onto the stone

I must have been doing it wrong all these years or else I am lazy. I always build my pizza right on my stone and we eat it right off the stone. No need for other tools. I make pizza weekly too. I have three stones so everyone gets what they want.

    Stripping Cast Iron

I have read that flax seed oil is a really good oil to use. I may look into that. I have some bacon grease that I was thinking of using. Not sure though.

    Stripping Cast Iron

Lol Saparrowgrass! I don't think you'd get it back if you shipped it to me. We have made significant progress. I hope everyone doesn't mind the updates. Here is the latest. As you can see there are only a few spots left in the bottom. Yay! In the home stretch and almost time to season. I...

    Stripping Cast Iron

Thanks! It just says, "10 1/2" Chicken Fryer" on the bottom. I purposely looked for a generic one because I didn't want to wait to find one at a thrift store and I knew I could find a smooth bottomed one on eBay for a decent price. It ended up being less than $20 shipped. The lid that is on my...

    Stripping Cast Iron

Thanks @Bigjim68. I will be using my pan. I have used this method in the past although not on as gunky a pan. This one is taking longer than any other pan I have cleaned. I am not too worried about the chemical's as you pointed out.

Lol! I have to admit it is fun getting up in the morning to see my progress. So, yes, maybe a little:smile:

    Stripping Cast Iron

Yeah I chose the oven cleaner method for the lye. It should only be a couple more days now. Here is today's progress: There is some really thick stuff on the bottom and sides. It's coming slowly though. Next time I will either stick it in a fire or get a stronger lye. This is a long but...

    Stripping Cast Iron

"I think the TSA has a thing about disposable lighters, blow torches and a bundle of sticks in one's carry on luggage." I have always wanted to own a blow torch. I haven't checked it this morning yet. It's that bottom edge around the sides that is the most crusty and is going to give me...

    Stripping Cast Iron

Thanks all! This gives me more additional ideas. I just can't wait for it to be done so I can season it and use it. We are making progress: It is back in the plastic bag now with additional oven cleaner on it.

    Stripping Cast Iron

I need your suggestions for stripping cast iron. I just got a new to me chicken fryer off of eBay. It is going to be perfect once I get it stripped and reseasoned. It has so much build up on the sides of the inside that its thick and cracked so I really would like to start from scratch. I only...

    What pan is this?

Yes, not sure, and yes. I would say its nearly as heavy as cast iron. The larger number on the underside is 1392. Under that is is the number 286109 0. If it's not a great pan it's fine. It was only $3.99 but it looked to be in such awesome and rarely used shape that I couldn't pass it up...
