Ground turkey, do you use it?

I think in our household, it depends upon what is on sale that week. We use either really lean ground beef or regular ground turkey but in the exact same manner as ground beef...except maybe in hamburgers. I think my dad just prefers that to be actual beef. But after spices and browning, we...

Dulce de leche - what is it for?

It's really for whatever you want. It's a very creamy caramel and quite simple to make, even just simmering a can of sweetened condensed milk on the stove for a few hours works. I have had dulce de leche ice cream, cheesecake, would be a great dip for fruits.

    Baked Custard

Never boring! Quite possibly one of the best dessert genres in the world.

Using on-hand ingredients to cook basic meals

A quick suggestion: start with a generic cuisine or region and work from there. Typically the same spices are used in most dishes from the same region and can be adapted pretty easily to whatever you're making. Good luck.

    Baked Custard

ACF? Nope just a music major with a desire to go to culinary school. Hmm don't think our oven is capable of that; I'll have to look into that, thanks for the tip!

    Baked Custard

I would suggest a flan or, to be creative, a coconut and rum flan. Simple, flavorful, and a big hit whenever I make it. In case you want it: 1 can evap milk, 1 can sweetened condensed milk, 4 eggs, 1.5 tsp vanilla, and enough sugar (usually 1 cup) to make caramel for the bottom of your baking...

What's your favorite ice cream or frozen dessert treat?

Have no idea what the recipe is but I've had a dulce de leche cream bar while in Honduras. Was the perfect afternoon snack after walking around all day in the city. Also available (sadly before I got to them) were guanabana (or soursop) cream bars. Guanabana is a fruit primarily from central...

    Pan Dulce/Semitas

Think I figured it out....didn't have the right recipe....too many of them are labelled pan dulce but pan dulce can mean any number of types of sweet breads...I was looking for conchas but only coming across the biscuit type. So what I made was correct, however I was wrong. Still any tips...

    Pan Dulce/Semitas

Yes and he has actually promised to help me make them...however setting an actual date has failed miserably as he forgets and plans other things. Beyond that, none of our other friends cook and I am the only one that seriously bakes.

    Pan Dulce/Semitas

Thanks, I hadn´t thought about substituting the bread dough for a puff pastry. Probably if I combine the topping with a puff pastry, I´ll get the texture right plus the flavor as it seems most of the flavor of the semita comes from the (almost) cookie dough topping. May take some time before I...

    Pan Dulce/Semitas

Use milk instead of water to prep the yeast? That's the only liquid called for in the dough besides the eggs.

    Pan Dulce/Semitas

Needing help on making pan dulce (or as most of my Honduran friends call them: semitas). Have used three different recipes, one of which was translated (I thought okay). The last one looked the most promising; however it still isn't the right consistancy. Having tried homemade semitas from a...

    Ethnic Diets?

It seems that in most diners you can order a chicken strip dinner with fries and the toast and gravy come automatically (personally do not like gravy and just use BBQ sauce for everything except the toast). As for the regional diets, being from the midwest, a lot is fried or at least not...
