Ancillary question to "what are you reading"

Length of book makes no real difference. I have recently realized that I tend to gravitate toward authors who write short chapters, for whatever reason. Series are great! Can't get into the Harry Potter series, for whatever reason, however. As far as buying books is concerned, our local...

How do you use Balsamic Vinegar?

I pan-fry onions in balsamic with sage and black pepper and serve them with pork chops marinated in Balsamic and drizzled with EVOO. Very easy and tasty. I also occasionally do the onions then fry the chops on the stovetop with a bit of olive oil.

    Nervous Around Knives

I cut myself dozens of times until I was given a set of decent Henckel knives. Suddenly, with properly sharp knives I didn't cut myself as often. I learned proper cutting techniques from Graham Kerr on TV. Made all the difference in the world. Also, using the proper knife for the job makes a...

    Turkey In A Roaster Oven

First of what will (probably) be many questions. We just picked up a roaster oven the other day. Our plan is to do a turkey breast this year and we'd like to cook it in the roaster. Problem is, neither of us have ever used one. A couple of questions: -The directions say that the liquids...

To wok or not to wok?

Andy has it. I use my wok constantly and getting it hot enough is the big trick. A good carbon steel wok with the heat ring, particularly is using a gas stove. -Make sure you don't use too much oil. -Make sure everything you will need is sitting within arm's reach. -Start cooking just as...

Photo taken by yours truly. I don't need a location, just what it is. Bonus if you can tell me what application this is used for.

Who is and was the smartest person?

(applauds Mudbug's list!) I was going to remark on the definition of "smart" but Alix beat me to it. Interesting question. Living? I'd have to give the nod to Stephen Hawking. Dead? I'm going to vote Thomas Jefferson, simply due to his sweeping interests and wide-ranging abilities. Plus, he...

What's the last movie you watched?

"Taxi Driver". I'd never seen it before and Tivo'd it off cable. De Niro is a national treasure. No one does creepy like him. Well, Nicholson, but that's a different type of creepy.

It's a Kodama or Tree Spirit. Japanese. I don't know of a second name, however. Can anyone tell I've seen WAY too much anime with my daughter?

    Your Favorite Bottle Dressing

"Feast From The East" Sesame Dressing. We get it from Costco here in California. It's supposed to be for Chinese Chicken Salad but I eat it on a simple mixed greens salad for many a lunch and it's fantastic. Also makes a mighty good chicken/pork marinade with a couple of additions.

    Name that food...

You were right, Alix. I haven't been near the computer today. Obviously I have to be a bit more...enterprising in my puzzles in the future. As for yours...(shrugs)...

    Cleaning mushrooms poll

I don't know if anyone else does that or not, but I always have until tonight. Did the damp towel trick and it worked fine. I'll be doing that from now on. Much easier.

    Howdy Foodies!

consults his official Montana highway map WOW, you must get a bucketload of snow!!! We are looking at Kalispell among other places. Probably be a year or three before we can move but we want to get out there this spring/summer to take a look around. I might pick your brain a bit in PM, if you...

What's For Dinner, Friday, November 12th?

Made a Beef Stroganoff and it came out juuuust fine. Tried the new Lea & Perrin's Low Sodium Worcestershire Sauce in it and (surprisingly) found it to be a bit sweeter than the original. Looking at the label for the original found an interesting fact. The "original" has High Fructose Corn Syrup...

    Cleaning mushrooms poll

"Peeled" as in removing the "skin" on the cap of the mushroom. When you run them under cold water and brush a thumb against the cap, a sort of skin comes off. That's what I mean.

    Cleaning mushrooms poll

Wow, just getting ready to run to the store to pick up some sour cream for a Stroganoff and here's this thread. Generally I've always rinsed and peeled, but I might try the "damp towel" method instead this time around. And raw, cooked, chopped, sliced, whole, canned, fresh I love 'em all!

Just wondering ... what is everyone reading now?

I went to a library book sale and found 7 hardcover Robert B. Parker novels. He's one of my favorites so I'm working my way through those. Great writer, especially the Spenser novels. Speaking of Nora Roberts, I also found an autographed copy of Nora Roberts "Black Hills" that I most likely...
