What is your weather like right now?

10F when the kids got on the school bus this morning......kinda chilly. Plenty of sunshine right now but it's still cold at 23F.......I think I'll stay indoors....

A warning would have been nice....

I don't see many raccoons.....unless they are roadkill. Just because I don't see them does not mean they aren't around......they destroyed my second planting of corn last season. That planting was for corn cut from the cob.....the first batch was frozen on the cob (and plenty tasty). Skunks I...

Addie is pretty much correct on this matter. Deer populations are constantly increasing in some areas......and these animals are very destructive. In 1970 the estimated population in Ohio, where I live, was 17,000. Last year the herd size was 700,000. In the 70's and 80's I never had to erect a...

A warning would have been nice....

Almost missed this one..... I would love to see some of the predators return. The only problem is that there's open season year round on coyotes. We don't have much other than those for predators and people shoot them on sight. I used to hear their songs in the middle of the night as I sat at...

A warning would have been nice....

The soon to be 12 year old g-daughter said the same thing this morning......she also wants some jerky, too. Bad thing is she does not want to see the entire process of the harvest. I used to take my deer in to be processed. That is one thing I no longer do and am unsure of whether you get the...

A warning would have been nice....

It's not a matter of lack of meat for the table......just a matter of variety of meats. I did a quick check on prices for venison and the harvested animal is worth ~$400. I am not some avid hunter that really enjoys killing animals.....processing meat from start to finish is not a pleasant task...

A warning would have been nice....

OK.......hiking through the woods is a plus. I haven't done that for years. Using rolled bales of hay for a blind on a cold snowy day I do not miss at all. My oldest son still does that and gets set up well before daybreak with his tree stand. Defib?? Nah.......I raised 5 children......:rofl...

A warning would have been nice....

They stand along the fence line and watch us watching them.....not tame but not all that scared. I told the kid to put the gun away for the day. He's working on his vehicle and I'm in charge of the meat dept. He needs to go to the store and get bags for the vac sealer. I don't plan on going...

A warning would have been nice....

Sitting at my desk and reading the news this morning......pretty much minding my own business. Then I hear a loud gunshot......very loud....:ermm:. I quickly spun my chair around to see my son standing at the back slider with the barrel his 50cal muzzle loader stuck out the back door. First...

    Pie Crusts

The recipe submitted by puffin3 sounds very similar to a recipe given to me by an elderly neighbor more than 30 years ago. Great recipe for pie crust!! The vinegar really breaks the egg down.

    Let's talk Knives

 I should have never wandered into this thread........I'm shopping for knives now. I guess if I get some decent knives I'll have to do the same with them as I do my tools.......under lock and key.

    Let's talk Knives

The Lansky looks very nice!! Since the days of watching Julia Child, Justin Wilson, and other celebrity chefs on PBS every Saturday I had always wanted a set of professional knives. I got over it when I looked at prices. If I spent all day in a kitchen earning a living the case would be...

    Pumpkin Pie

Most of the recipes are fine in JoC but I don't have an updated edition. No way I'm going to cook a pork roast to 185 F...... I still remember the days of trichinosis. My kids use the recipe for pumpkin pie that is on the Libby's label......I use the one in JoC and have been using it...

    Pumpkin Pie

One year I made two types of pumpkin pie. Standard and one that substitutes 2 tbs molasses and 1 1/2 cups of sour cream for the evap milk (2 pie recipe)......wasn't too bad. Recipes are from Joy of Cooking......1976 edition. I keep the book next to my desk.....along with many automotive manuals.

    Petty Vents

I can't stand the forlorn cries emanating from the bathroom......... I constantly remind the g-kids of self reliance and thinking ahead but get 0 support from the parents.......I sound like a broken record. Getting them to keep their dirty laundry in a specific location is...

    Petty Vents

Air Force One is an impressive sight. I had traded houses with one of my sons and was living SW of Columbus a few years ago. As I was sitting at my desk I could hear a large, low flying aircraft spooling the engines up and down. Naturally I went outside to have a look.....the neighbors were...

Did anyone eat tonight? Monday 11-23-15

Noooo...... Three frozen Red Baron pizzas and my son decided to also fix a package of frozen chicken stir-fry. Not thinking ahead, he decided to do two servings of quick rice after the stir-fry was done. He had to get something from the small local market/pizza shop while the rice was...

    Petty Vents

I wouldn't get much done if I lived that close to an airport......I like watching the planes. Some of the larger planes fly right over my house and I usually head to the back porch for a look when I hear one........they fly low and slow. MedFlight is another frequent flyer in my area with a...

    What's cooking Sunday 11/22/15?

I should have asked him if he refrigerates his garlic......I think that can make a difference from what I've read. I've even used questionable garlic that has just begun to sprout with no discoloration......just doesn't have much flavor. The kid's garlic did have a pretty color......

    Here's An Odd Question

Gotta say what the others have said.......contact LL Bean on proper care. You should be able to use boot oil the leather parts. I rarely wear anything other than work boots.....even around the house. I've bought nothing but Redwing boots since '75......extra $$$ but well worth it. My current...

    What are you doing?

Very nice bench, PF......looks great. Your dad did a nice job with what he had on hand. I have a rack in my garage for lumber that I've salvaged or bought over the years. I retired from carpentry a few years ago.....commercial and residential. I still have many tools that I rarely...

    What's cooking Sunday 11/22/15?

I got off quite easy yesterday......my son had an early Thanksgiving get-together. 20lb turkey, 14lb ham, and way too many sides. Desserts galore......I gave up trying to sample the many pies when I couldn't get close to the serving table. His townhouse apartment was crammed with people. I've...
