    Dumplings

When I make dumplings, I drop them right onto meats or veggies that are at the top of the stew. They should kind of sit half into the liquid and half above. Maybe you have too much broth. You could try taking some out and then after the dumplings steam...put it back. I put the lid on after I...

Quest for the Perfect Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

 A quick note about the cookies: Put them into plastic bags or containers after they cool down. I put away some in zip lock bags for my daughter to take back to school with her and those are still chewy. The ones I kept in the tin and cookie jar became crisp in a day.

Quest for the Perfect Oatmeal Raisin Cookie

The third batch of cookies are baking. The first batch was a little flat so I added 1/4 cup of flour to the rest of the dough. Second batch was perfect. Flavor was excellent. I like the cinnamon in it and the hint of molasses. I didnt have nuts so just used raisins. Also, I wasnt sure whether...

Chris and Bubba, I'll try these this weekend also. My daughter Jen is home from college (spring break) and wants cookies. I made a batch 2 days ago but between my husband and grandma... ...nothing left for Jen. I'll let you know how they turn out. I like molasses in a cookie...gives it a...

    Economics of home-baked bread

Elf: Just got to close your eyes and jump in...(or is that to learn to swim?) You really cant go wrong. Even a heavy dry loaf is good turned into ranch toast or bread pudding or if its really bad...doctored up bread crumbs.

    Economics of home-baked bread

Our family makes bread every day and I its soooo much better than store bought bread. I buy flour in bulk (44lbs) but you could buy smaller bags on sale. I also buy yeast in bulk which you could do. Buy it at a resturant supply company. The dry yeast is vacumn packed and very cheap and should...

    Thick noodles

Lead in water is a problem mostly in older homes that use lead solder but even in newer homes hot water can put excess copper into drinking water.

    Apple Vinaigrette from Disney Resorts

Chris, you sound like my husband...he's been begging for me to take a vacation and of course that means Disney. (Maybe you have room for him  ) The first time we stayed at the Wilderness Lodge. This was quite a few years ago. The salad was with a chuckwagon type of dinner we had in the...

    Thick noodles

I love thicker noodles so I make them myself. Just roll out the dough as thick or thin as you want then slice them up and boil. Hand rolling usually makes for a thicker noodle. We also buy a german noodle at a specialty store that is thicker than the usual soup noodle. Another soup noodle I...

    Oven question

Im not an oven expert by any means  but had a similar problem years ago. I was told my coil was bad. It had to be replaced. It was hotter in the back half the oven. Eventually it got so bad that I couldnt just turn the pans to correct the problem. They replaced the coil and it was fine...

    Fat Tuesday

Kyles: We call it Fat Tuesday because for Lent we usually give something up (usually desserts or sweets) so we get our share before hand. Whats a "savoury pancake with spicy mince"? Would it be like our potato pancakes or more like a breakfast pancake? And is the mince like mincemeat? Just...

Should you season All-Clad Stainless cookware?

I have stainless, have never seasoned the pans and have owned them for 10 years. I dont see the reason for it. I agree with Scott... see what the company has to say. (and let us know...we're curious) :)

    Fat Tuesday

Well, the donuts are done and they are fairly good...Dough could have been a bit sweeter but overall good. I fried them with the jelly in them and I have one comment. Seal those things up tight!! Had a couple that burst out. Jelly and oil doesnt mix too well...My stove top is a mess  I...

    Fat Tuesday

Coquille, we must be talking about the same type of "donut" because I cant stop eating them either. But since today is Fat Tuesday which is the day before lent begins we have to stuff ourselves with cakes and sweets. I am going to take your advice and put the jelly in now and let it...

    Fat Tuesday

Anybody making homemade Paczki? Since today is Fat Tuesday I've decided to try a recipe I found on the internet and make my own. The thing I found kind of odd, is that the recipe calls for you to let the dough raise once then cut donut sized circles, put in a jelly filling, top it with another...
