What are you having for a snack, right now?

mmmm - this all sounds so good. I'm actually being good tonight and eating sliced watermelon from the deli. What I really want, however, is the leftover pumpkin pie sitting on my counter.

    Santuko?

wow! Thanks guys :). I'm actually going to be buying a new knife - looks like I'll look into a Gyuto or a Santuko. I have my beloved regular chef knife - my staple, but it would be nice to see if there's something else out there. I appreciate your feedback...thanks again!!!

Local Food Traditions, History and Myths...

Not sure if there are other New Yorkers here - so I'll represent :) It's hard to find a real bagel anywhere else (boiled, not just bread baked in a circle). We also have delicious deli meats...where the sandwiches have inches thick layers of rare roast beef and the chicken salad is made just...

    Santuko?

I may be a little behind the times here, but I keep hearing about this type of knife and would like to know what the benefits of using this type of knife are (as opposed to a basic chef's knife). Was it originally meant for Sushi (or is that a different knife)? Sorry for the ignorance

    Best cookbooks

I love France the Beautiful Cookbook - all the recipes work wonderfully and are authentic. I also love the Willliams Sonoma series. They're small enough to keep on the counter open with me as I cook.

Arkansas Mother Gives Birth to 16th Child

I think that people had larger families long ago b/c there was a higher chance of losing a child in childbirth, infancy or early childhood. Also, kids worked more - be it on a farm or in a factory. They were important to the survival of the family. Nowadays, it's more economical for families to...

    Recipe Software

Okay, a little shamless promotion here, but I'm a personal chef and was very frustrated with menu/recipe/planning software out there. My husband is an IT guy/programmer and together, we created Chefhelper.com - originally it was just for my personal use, but we figured other chefs may like...

What do you think of Atkins?

I'm with jkath also...eating a well-varied, fresh-cooked diet has always worked for me. If people could listen to and learn to trust that their bodies know what they need, we would all be a lot healthier. I love bacon but I also love strawberries and fresh breads. It's all about balance.

    Coffee?

I hope my coffee doesn't go up in price, it's already expensive enough! I got spoiled by drinking Illy (a DELICIOUS Italian brand) coffee habitually at a little cafe where I used to work, so now that's the only brand I buy. I think the price of coffee depends on which port it is imported....I...

    Brownies

I am making some brownies from a recipe that doesn't call for any baking powder/soda - just 8 eggs. Is this typical for brownies? (sorry for such a dumb question - I'm not much of a baker..just a cook). thanks!
