My boyfriends dad has this little stapler thing for socks specifically that he puts on em right before he puts them in the wash. They don't ruin the sock or anything, it just clips them together... Now if the pair go missing, I'd consider the note idea.

There's some spray that you can buy at pet stores that will keep animals away from that area (usually) and so you could always try that. If that doesn't work, you might want to reconsider having cloth curtains... eek.

I hope all is alright, even though I do not know you (I'm new). I've had similar cases happen to me, but not as extreme... I'm sure the doctors have told you this by now, but you probably should avoid major exercising that puts strain on your knees. Just lightly stretch your legs when they hurt...
