May is Lyme Disease Awareness Month

The problem is ---- the rest of the months should be Lyme Disease Awareness months also.

The CDC and NIH, sites most often visited by people and doctors who want to learn about Lyme disease, are full of mis- and half- truths.

Become aware, if you want to, by visiting the International Lyme and Associated Disease Society at:

Thank you, Cave. An important notice at this time of year. Especially with the fluctuating temperatures and early tick season.

For those that want to watch an hour long video about Lyme here is the link. Although produced in France almost all the facts are the same in the U.S. and Canada. A few discrepancies are present, but for the most part a good overview.

If that link takes you to a page that asks for a password put LD in the box. Capitals.

For those that don't think they need to watch this video, please save it in case they or a friend/family member is bitten by a tick. Especially those that are diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis or Lupus or Chronic Fatigue---- very common mis-diagnoses for Lyme.

"UNDER OUR SKIN
A chilling tale of microbes, medicine and money, this Oscar shortlisted film has changed the landscape of the Lyme epidemic, bringing unprecedented awareness in an engaging and accessible way. The definitive record of the Lyme controversy, UNDER OUR SKIN exposes a hidden story of medical and scientific malfeasance and neglect. As official case numbers explode and hundreds of thousands of people around the world go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, the film is as relevant and timely as ever."

There's a trailer on that site also. Some libraries have the film to borrow. And there may be some portions of it on YouTube, if copyright doesn't interfere.

Watch it if you want to see what Lyme can do. Some people are devastatingly affected by it and others less so.

Ticks with spirochetes found in fossilized amber

“In the United States, Europe and Asia, ticks are a more important insect vector of disease than mosquitos,” Poinar said. “They can carry bacteria that cause a wide range of diseases, affect many different animal species, and often are not even understood or recognized by doctors.

“It’s likely that many ailments in human history for which doctors had no explanation have been caused by tick-borne disease.”

Lyme disease is a perfect example. It can cause problems with joints, the heart and central nervous system, but researchers didn’t even know it existed until 1975. If recognized early and treated with antibiotics, it can be cured. But it’s often mistaken for other health conditions."
