Siri and a southern accent

Do you have an Apple phone or pad, and a southern accent? Apparently, there’s a way to teach Siri to understand your accent!

Siri doesn’t have any trouble with my “California accent,” thank goodness! (A “California accent” is the subject of another post. I’ll get around to it...)

A friend of mine was taking her pre-teen children and several of their friends to see The Peanuts Movie a year or two ago. As they were getting in her minivan, she asked Siri where the nearest theater was that was playing it.

Siri kept responding with places to rent porno movies. Apparently, she wasn't pronouncing the 't' well enough.

The kids got a huge kick out of it.

I don't naturally have a Southern accent, but having lived in Texas for over 30 years, I can put one on when I want to.

I just tested it out, and Siri had no problem with my best "Bubba" talk. If even understood "Hey Siri, how often should I change my oil?" in Bubbaspeak.

Now, I am sober. All bets are off when it comes to a drunk "Bubba."

To a NYer, all Californians sound like Crush the Sea Turtle from Finding Nemo.

I don't do Apple, but my Samsung S9 hasn't had any problem with my Minnesota/Montana/Colorado boringly generic Midwestern speak. When I'm in the car and using the hands free Bluetooth on the highway, sometimes the road noise affects recognition. I make sure that I enunciate clearly and carefully.

Joel, since you've lived in Japan you'll get a kick out of this... and this is very typical.
