Things That Make You Go, "Hmmm."

Why is it we say, "tuna fish"...

...but we don't say, "beef mammal"...

...or "chicken bird"?

Shouldn't we say steak fried steak instead of chicken fried steak?

Why do we call it "beef" instead of "cow", and "pork" instead of "pig", "venison" instead of "deer"?

Chicken, turkey, duck, and fish are just that.

Why do we call a cup of coffee a "cup of Joe"? And have you ever heard of Maple Bacon Coffee and Sausage toast?

Chicken, turkey, duck, and fish are just that.
The words come from French: beef from boeuf = ox, pork from porc = pig, and venison from venison (old French) = game. Poultry is from poulet = chicken and veal from veau = calf.

At one time French was the "court language" in England and a number of European countries. Upper class folks spoke French and used the fancy French words for food.

Regular folks, who dealt with live animals, used the ordinary English terms.

Reading and writing wasn't common, so I guess only the rich had written recipes.

Why is it "a bra", but "a pair of pants"?

I especially agree with this one. For years I thought this was a chicken dish.
