This one isn't a competitive challenge, but rather, it is one to train the pallate. Purchase a bottle of A& W Root Beer, or Frosty Root Beer, a bottle of Squirt, and a bottle of your favorite cola. Taste each, separately and try to determine the flavors rolling around on your tongue. Don't forget to use your sense of smell, in the back of your nose to help.
Now, purchase a bottle of sparkling water and see if you can duplicate the flavors in found in the soda you tasted.
Try the same exercise with butterscotch candies. And finally, do the same thing with a jar of your favorite spaghetti sauce. Be honest and first tell us what you think are in the products, and then, how well you were able to duplicate the flavors.
Myself, I've been doing this for years, teaching myself to be able to deconstruct flavors in my mouth. So far, I'm about 70 % successful.
If you are like me, you will find some of the flavors will surprise you. Others will be easy to figure out. Have fun with this.
