I will never buy store made macaroni salad again

We forgot to get macaroni salad last week from the store, and GF loves it with her BBQ dogs/burgers. So I decided to make some which I never made before. I never looked up any recipes, but I knew it has hard-boiled egg, mayo, celery, onions, pepper, salt, paprika, etc.. I've been eating the...

Ever feel this way after cooking a great meal?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NLWy9Wp_RWY Like when I buy free-range beef from a local meat monger, then my wife wants it well-done with a side of ketchup. :)

If you had a restaurant/cafe, what would be on your menu?

We prefer local family-owned restaurants, and there are 3 that we love around here. One of them has been in the same family since the 1940s. Anyway, the better places tend to have a more concise menu instead of 20 pages of items that end up running up food costs and lowering quality and speed...

    Lousy pre-made food

Stepson is sheltering in place with us. He's 22. Anyway my wife took him to the grocery store, and he picked out a bunch of pre-made food. He bought like 20 of these name brand breakfast bowl things with scrambled eggs, cheese, potatos and steak (a few small pieces) in them. Wife made me...

People who think they can cook but can't

Wife's friend (a hard luck case) has been staying here for the last few months. She can not cook but thinks she can. We had a pork roast in the freezer, and she dumped it (frozen solid, one large chunk) in the crockpot around 2 PM with like a gallon of water and onions (not chopped). She...

It's amazing what you need to outfit a new apartment

My brother was sick for a long time, his wife left, and now he moved 2,500 miles here to Ohio and is starting over. I helped him out with outfitting his new apartment. It's amazing what a person needs. wok (his ex wife is Taiwanese so he's used to wok cooking) toaster knife set cutting board...

Meat and cheese ends at your deli counter

Neighbor lady is super super frugal. She was telling me you could buy the ends of deli meats/cheeses at the deli for a buck a pound. So you're basically saving like 400-500 percent. I tried it today. I went to Rulli Bros (local mom and pop supermarket) and ordered some ends, and the lady gave...

It's nice to have a DO rather than an MD as a family doc

I went to see the family doctor today to get refills for my scripts, and I told him my neck's been kinda sore and tight. So he has me lay down and then twists my neck back into shape. It feels way better now. An MD would've given me a script for Tylenol. lol. Granted I guess there is some...

People on fixed incomes buying fast food

Wife's cousin is disabled and only gets like $170/month in food benefits. She wastes it in the hot foods/prepared foods/deli area of the Giant Eagle (across the street from her apartment). Wife tried to show her some basic recipes like homemade soups, subs, etc., but her cousin started to get...

Meat case at the local grocery store

They sure know how to display their offerings to look as appealing as possible. They have various cuts of steak, hamburgers (pre-formed with various seasonings), freshly cut up chicken, chops, ka-bobs already on skewers with veggies, meatballs. I've been grilling out like 4 times a week all...

    Annoying relative finally left

Wife's cousin is not welcome in the rest of their family because he's an arse who has never made an effort to be even remotely nice/civil. But my wife is very forgiving and inclusive and is the only one who talks to him besides his parents (who don't like him much either). So he showed up with...

Lazy, feeble, but yummy way to defrost meat

I had some partially frozen pork chops. I placed them in the cast iron skillet that already had veggie oil in it then cranked up the heat, and the chops warmed up quickly and thawed and got a nice sear on them. Then I put them in the crockpot to slow cook with some mushroom soup and milk.

Old recipes on those 3x5 cards - bust 'em out

Wife dug this old recipe card for me to cook tonight (had the neighbor over). It's labeled "Jessie's BBQ Isaly's Recipe". Jessie is a friend from 30 years ago. I could barely read the card it was so yellowed. Pound of Isaly's chopped ham (have deli cut it super thin -- almost transparent) or...

Kitchen tools you need two of

It seems my spatula/turner is always in the dishwasher sitting there dirty when I need it (which is often), so last night I bought (rage bought) a new one off ebay at 2 AM. lol. It's just an el cheapo $5 steel one. Spatula is definitely a tool you need 2 of. Any other tools in the same category?

Vintage kitchen gadgets put to the test

This guy's a character. He's from Russia, but he lives in North Carolina with his American wife. He tests gadgets and does science experiments and such. They have a couple of beautiful huskies that sneak into the videos sometimes. He also tests modern kitchen gadgets and any category of...

I miss all the smaller grocery stores

I was over at my friend's house helping with a project when I got a text from the wife to grab an onion and a bell pepper. Unfortunately there are no food stores between his place and mine (7 miles away), so I had to drive to the Giant Eagle that added 5 miles to the trip making it 12 miles...

    Waffle House fans?

I had to take a lady from church to her doctor appointment yesterday. I had missed breakfast and lunch and had an hour to kill before picking her up. So I went to Waffle House near her house. I got the All Star breakfast which is $8. You get toast, eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns, and a...

    Your favorite soup for winter?

I LOVE soup, but unfortunately the wife is not a real soup eater. So we never have it, unless I put together a soup in the crockpot before leaving for work. I have to be sneaky. It's a rare treat. Here's Friar Bernard 'Solanus' Casey (beard) serving up soup to the poor during the Great...

Who makes a nice spatula and tongs set?

I really need some gear. We have one metal spatula, and if it's dirty, in the dishwasher, or out on the grill, then I have to cook without it. And I use it for a lot of stuff besides flipping burgers and meats -- including removing fried foods out of the pan like fries. Also, I only have one...

    Outdoor rustic cooking in India

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUlpqtz1gv4&t=59s I thought this was pretty interesting to see one man prepare enough food for about 100 people (homeless, poor). I like those huge pans. Now I want to make some fried chicken, yummy.

Took the neighbor to Trader Joe's

Neighbor lady has been wanting to go to Trader Joe's for a long time because she likes the TJ's products she's tried at our house -- like the sauces, coffee, etc.. But she only drives locally within a few mile radius, and her husband works 5/6 days a week and has no energy for 1.5 hour trips...

    And I thought I was cheap/frugal

Neighbor lady said she buys ground turkey for 40 cents a pound or whatever and adds a few beef bouillon cubes to it to make it "just like real ground beef". :)

I got a new toy -- bread machine

At the church rummage sale, I saw a Breadman Plus for $10. Looks like it has never been used, and it came in its original box with the recipe book (to make pizza dough and various breads). Our old one bit the dust a few months ago after 10 years. Now I can easily make pizza dough again. I...

    Finally got a dishwasher

Our dishwasher bit the dust in 2010 (lasted 14 years, Frigidaire brand). We didn't replace it as money was tight. Finally after 7 years, we bought a new one at Home Depot. We have the compact 18 inch one, and these for some reason cost twice as much as a regular 24 inch model. We wanted the...
