Yesterday, I picked and pickled 10 pint jars worth of sweet banana peppers. I washed, topped, sliced, seeded and packed jars, about an hour long process, all without gloves. Because they are sweet peppers, it didn't even dawn on me that I might have a problem.
Well, 5 hours and several Internet remedies later (rinsing with rubbing alcohol, soaking in milk, soaking in egg white, soaking in vodka), I found myself on the phone with our local nurse hotline. She said that because I had washed my hands with Dawn, the oil should be gone but because it was on there for so long, there was little to do other than soak my hand in ice water or wrap with a vinegar soaked cloth. She also recommended I call the poison control hotline if it persisted.
Fast forward 2 hours and a lot of pain later, I again found myself on the phone, this time to poison control. They said soak it in (are you ready?) Maalox. 2 generic bottles filled my bowl and I soaked my screaming hand for about 20 minutes and IT WORKED.
So there's your helpful kitchen tip of the day. If you over do it on the peppers and can't get the burn off your hands, soak them in a bowl full of antacid.
