    Kitchen grease removal... this worked!

So often so called grease cleaners just don't do the job, but it looks like there are a few products that actually work. Thanks to each of you for sharing this information. After all it is so much cheaper to clean than replace.

    Aero (hydroponic) Garden questions

I have grown herbs successfully for many years in an indoor hydroponics system. A friend of mine just brought an Emily's hydroponics system that she likes very much. I have read mixed reviews about the Aero system. But it looks attractive and I am sure you will be able to adapt it using some of...

    Blackberry (Blueberry) Biscuit Cake

Well the recipe certainly sounds and looks good. Will take your advice on the third can of berries though and maybe a bit more liquid in the dough mix to make it a bit softer. Can't beat a dutch oven for great cooking

Can I pick your brain on something?

What a totally inspired group of talented women you all are. I love your ideas and have mentioned them to my grandaughter who also thought this was a great idea and will pass it onto her teacher as a project for the class for the new year. Dina: Good on your daughter and her classmates, and I...

    Stomp garlic with shoes

I guess the guy missed the class on garlic crushing and improvised. Takes all kinds. When you think of it we would probably never eat out if we knew what goes on in a lot of restaurants.

    Offal..adored or abhorred

Lambs Fry cooked up with bacon, onions and mushrooms and served with creamy mashed potato and peas. Just makes me drool thinking of it. Tripe has to be cooked right. I have had it where it has been cooked to the point of being rubbery which is not a nice effect. Love steak and kidney pudding...

    Breakfast Soft Taco

Please can you explain how you cook the egg whites. The recipe is sound and simple but I'm not sure if I cooked the egg whites correctly. I whisked them and cooked them in some butter. But I would like to know how they should be cooked for this recipe.

    TNT Orange Cranberry Sauce

Really nice recipe. Thank you CherryRed. And yes it is very tasty on English muffins and fruit muffins. I cut down on the honey to reduce the sweetness.

    Okra, shrimp and papaya?

Totally agree, grilled shrimp is great. I often baste the shrimp with garlic butter for added flavour.

Anyone else have a Little Blue Book?

I have a notebook for jotting down recipes which are then transferred to a larger folder and catalogued. I like the idea of the digital pen Harborwitch sounds like a great way to get those recipes well and truly organised.

    Peeling Turnips?

I agree that if the turnips are young and small then they don't need to be peeled. Older larger turnips probably should be peeled. Try cooking them unpeeled and see how they turn out. Most of the goodness is supposed to be just under the skin.

    Cook's Illustrated Mashed Sweet Potatoes

I find the best way is to boil or roast the potatoes and mash with butter and milk. A touch of parsley and finely chopped onion adds to the flavour. I must say I do prefer my sweet potato roasted.

    Eating Fresh Figs

Just split open and eat, there is nothing nicer than fresh figs, they taste divine. My daughter in law had two trees in their new place and not knowing what they were she was going to pull them out until I introduced her to the fruit.

What piece of cookware do you deep fry in?

I agree, cast iron is the way to go. Personally I prefer my electric deep fryer but then it has the lift out oil container and all the parts go in the dishwasher. I used to have one of the older style that was hard to clean and that was when I purchased a cast iron pan. The family brought me...

    Butter or Margarine

Butter, at least its natural and it tastes far better than margarine. You only need to read how margarine is made to realise its probably not the best thing to eat. I figure why substitute something natural for some imitation trying to look and taste like the natural product.
