The 'thingy' with the cotton and mesh is for alcohol - I just take the cotton out after removing the screen and drop the Sterno can right in there. If it is what I'm thinking of it also has a swinging lid attached to the handle to control the heat. Been wrong before

RipVan - I have had a Waring iron for about 3 years now - use it 2-3 times a month and think it's great. Of course, I bought it when it was about twice the price it is now - figures:rolleyes:. This one flips, has a temp control, drip plate, etc. only does one waffle at a time.

Recieved this item the other day - quite impressed. I, too, use a coffee grinder - great for making 5-spice powders or anything that requires a good amount of product. I use a mortar and pestle when I need some thing more cracked than ground (cracked pepper for pepper vodka :smile:). I think...
