    D-C Forum Foodies List

Here is another Florida one: Anita's Family Restaurant, Nokomis. Nokomis is just south of Sarasota on Rt. 41. Anita's serves burgers to die for, breakfast is great (get the Grilled Biscuit with your food!) and everything we've had has been well prepared and reasonable. Not a fancy place, but...

    Nick Malgieri

I just saw this thread; it's been a while since I've visited the forums. I met Nick at the Fancy Food Show in New York, several years ago. He autographed his book for me and we had a nice conversation about food. He is just a super guy, the kind you would invite for dinner and some wine. I have...

    Did anyone eat breakfast today?

I ate a banana on my way to check out the sea turtle nests. I'm on the Sea Turtle Patrol here in Sarasota County, FL and we hit the beach at 6 a.m. before the rest of the world does. We had a nest hatch overnight--saw the little tracks leading to the Gulf--so that was exciting. They hatch at...

    Last item you bought?

Fishing tackle! Two rods with spinning reels, a well-equipped tackle box, landing net, bait bucket--all for $30. It was on craigslist--the guy and his family are moving to Brazil and will not be close to water. Since I am learning to fish, this was a real bargain. Everything is in good shape, too!

    What are you baking today?

Corn pone! Mother and I are jonesin' for this and I have decided to make it. So many calories, so little time.....

    The Breakfast Sandwich

Grilled peanut butter and grape jam (or strawberry preserves.) The bacon sounds good, too; I'll add that next time!

    Wusthof Knifes

I have only Wusthof for my "good" knives. Woe to the person who throws them in a drawer. They are kept in a knife block. Love 'em all...

Anyone have any opinions on why my ice cream maker does not make ice cream?

I have no problems with my little Cuisinart. I assemble it, turn it on, THEN pour the custard mix in slowly. It never fails.

    Substitute for white baking pieces

What PieSusan said. Wish we could get Peter's white chocolate here.

    Meyer Lemons

I can still get them here in southern Florida. Since we just moved here in September, I'm not sure how long they are in season. I have stocked up! They make a wonderful marmalade, pie, cake, marinade, etc. Also in my yard is a Ponderosa lemon tree. The lemons weigh about a pound and a half...

    Lemon Chess Pie

And I have another version from my Tennessee grandmother: 1 unbaked pie shell 1 1/2 cups white sugar 1/3 cup butter, melted and cooled to room temperature 1 tablespoon vinegar 3 eggs, slightly beaten 1 teaspoon vanilla Stir together sugar, butter, vinegar, eggs and vanilla. Don't overmix...

What are some interesting things to do with shrimp?

Just google "shrimp al pil-pil." This is a spicy Spanish shrimp dish that is amazing. I serve it with a salad and plenty of bread to dip in the juice. The shrimp flavor comes through very well. And it's easy to prepare. Enjoy!

Going to a grocery store while on vacation

I'm one of these people really addicted to this. My husband used to get annoyed at me until he discovered that the stuff I bought ended up in a delicious meal for him. Now he gladly goes with me. He does draw the line at my dragging him through every botanical garden wherever we go!

    Bread Pics

I visited that market a couple of years ago while on a trip to the Botanical Gardens. What a wonderful place; it is Disney World for foodies. I took home as much stuff as I could. Would love to go there again but it's quite a haul from Florida!

    What to do w/mango/ginger chutney..

It's also one of those things you can put over a block of cream cheese, or mix it with the cheese, to spread on crackers. I like it with chicken, fish, even a 'burger. Good on a turkey sandwich, too. I make my own peach-ginger chutney.

    Convection ovens

I use my convection oven for just about everything. The trick to cooking something in a deep pot is to put it on the "convection roast" setting, if that is an option. In my other house I had a TriVection GE oven--thermal, convection, and microwave--and you could use all of them or one. If you...

Soup Base - Who Uses It?

The chicken base is particularly good. I use my own stock but use that to stretch it, since it is very salty. Nice for gravy, too.

    Thursday's Dinner - Nov. 6th

More leftovers. My hubby has been visiting me here in Florida for a month--the house in Ohio will not close until April--and he was so tired of his own cooking that he all but demanded three cooked meals a day. Now, the advantage to that is that there were small amounts of leftovers, of very...

    Sunday's dinner Nov 2nd..

Short ribs in the crock pot, with wine, tomato, thyme, carrots, onions, celery, bay leaf, and a little Lipton's beefy onion soup mix since I didn't have any beef stock. Parsley potatoes with fresh Italian parsley. Bananas Foster. With lots of rum in the bananas.

My new MAN GAUGE has arrived

Neither do I. I paid even more than that for my new Weber (the other lasted 16 years and finally just died) and the thermometer is not that impressive. You would think they could do better.
