What is your weather like right now?

Sunny, and reasonably warm, which for Nottingham at this time of year is a bit odd. It's cold in the shade, though!

Anyone have an electric, programmable tea brewer??

Hi Larry I think the device you are looking for is what we call a 'teasmade' (link) in the uk. These used to be popular over here , but are less so now (perhaps because we have all started drinking coffee!). However, my sister and I brought my Mum and Dad one for their 40th wedding aniversary a...

Just wondering ... what is everyone reading now?

Just finished 'In a Dry Season ' by Peter Robinson, and 'The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' by Stieg Larrson, while sitting in the sun on holiday. Both were good books, although Larrson's book has some fairly unpleasant adult themes, all justified by the contex of the story, so be warned if you...

    I confess. I have crockpotophobia.

I agree with the above. Mine was a godsend when I was out of work for a while, and really, really skint ~ mcuh cheaper than having the oven on low, and allowed me to make tasty stews with the cheapest cuts of meat. I think stews, chilli and many curry dishes come out of it fantasticly. I don't...

    Red lentil recipes?

Another great thing about red lentils is that they break down to a kind of 'mush' if cooked for a long time, which is great in a stew for thickening it. I often use them in my crock pot for this reason. If you are short of meat, and want to add something that will both thicken and ann protien to...

    What's for Dinner Wed. Sept, 30, 2009?

Money is tight, so I've loaded the slow cooker with some belly pork, red and brown lentils, onions, plum tomatoes, garlic, bell peppers, herbs, spices and chicken stock. Should have a spicey paprika pork and lentil stew by tea time :chef:

Please help me make my beef tacos beefier

Looks very similar to what I use, except I would add a organic stock cube (beef) or homemade stock, and I use balsamic vinigar in mine. I use the same spices, but in different proportions (more chili powder, less cumin). I also cook mine in my slow cooker for hours, and hours, and ..... well...

MOM'S COOKING: What did you love your mother to cook for you?

Eveything my mum cooks is superb, but I used to love cold pork and chips the day after a Sunday roast, and can vividly remember her beef wellington, Mmmmmm..... yummy.

    Tomato sauce in the US

Thanks for all the help ~ I think I'm confident enough to give a few dishes a try using tomato puree, perhaps thinned down a bit.

The last thing you bought, where did you buy it?

A pint of Wells Bombardier from my local pub. Proper english beer, bettered only by Batemans (another english real ale producer, sadly not available in my local)!

    Tomato sauce in the US

Thanks for that ~ looks quite easy to replicate. I think the tomato puree we get here has salt and sugar in it as well, so I should be able to get away with a straight swap.

    Who was your greatest influence

Thanks, Arky. I have to admit I was blessed with a very happy childhood, apart from school obviously, which only seemed to interupt the hunting, playing and general fun!

    Tomato sauce in the US

I have seen many recipes that have been written by someone in the US that contain 'a can of tomato sauce'. Over here in the UK, tomato sauce would either mean tomato ketchup, or possible those pre-prepared pasta sauces you get in jars, niether of which seemed to make sense in the recipes I was...

    Who was your greatest influence

For me, it would have to be my Mum and Dad. They moved our family to a small farm in the remote countryside when I was six months old so that we would have a better quality of life ~ most UK cities in the early 1970's were uncertain places. Both of them cooked, with my Dad loving the many...
