Vintage Cookbooks Passed Down in the Family

Greetings from Arizona! Being an avid collector of vintage cookbooks, I am curious to know what (favorite or otherwise) cookbooks you inherited from family members-- mother, father, aunt or grandmother. Two old cookbooks I inherited from my mother are The American Woman's Cookbook (1947) edited...

    How about a cookbook category?

For me there is nothing like holding a cookbook in your hands. I love the look, feel and smell of them. I often take one to bed with me and "dream" about what recipe I'll try the next day or week ahead; or change the recipe to suit ingredients I have on hand. If it's an old cookbook, I wonder...

Help please! Which Edition to buy of The Settlement Cook Book?

You are sweeeet and I agree, cookbooks are precious! I think maybe I'll look for a 1950's edition. That would also be in a reasonable price range too.

Help please! Which Edition to buy of The Settlement Cook Book?

Thank you for answering! I am a collector of cookbooks, a home cook and I may use it occasionally. I just like cookbooks and read them like some people read novels. I was asking because it's a classic, one I have never looked at and was wondering which era other cooks on the forum own. It...

Help please! Which Edition to buy of The Settlement Cook Book?

Hello to the Forum! I would like to buy a copy of The Settlement Cook Book: The Way to a Man's Heart by Mrs. Simon Kander, to add to my collection, but before I do, I am seeking some advice on which incarnation to buy. Do you think an early edition (roughly 1901-1915, the most pricey) is best...

A Snack Cake Good Enough to Eat

Mmmmm... I love healthy yummy things and this sounds good. I'm going to try it too! Could we go over the sweetener? 2 cups of sugar I presume - or the equivalent of Stevia...? Understanding RED VELVET CAKE

In the 1920's the red velvet cake was a signature dessert at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. My mother told me this story in about 1960: A woman (guest) having had the cake at the Waldorf asked the chef for the recipe which he gave to her. She was shocked when a bill arrived for $400...

    Garlic garden

Bliss, not weird at all. I just planted garlic a couple weeks ago and it's growing fast! This is the time of year we plant in the Southwest as AJ said. American Recipes - copycat cookbooks

Such good input from everyone. I am enjoying reading the posts! Regarding clone recipes, I've tried my hand at duplicating two coleslaw recipes from two different restaurants and was quite successful even improved on them by adding more more of an ingredient (green olives in a Cajun olive slaw)...

    American Recipes - copycat cookbooks

By looking at the ingredients of a copycat cookbook I have "More Top Secret Recipes" (1994) by Todd Wilbur, I can surmise that the recipes are similar or "in the same family", not real clones. In order to clone it, ingredients would have to be exact. For example: For BAILEY'S IRISH CREAM the...

Julie & Julia Movie Inspired Meal - How about you?

I saw the movie Julie and Julia and it inspired me to try something I had never made. I chose to try my first "Cheese Souffle". I substituted Havarti, which I had on hand, for the recommended sharp cheddar. Making the souffle was so much fun and scrumptious! I served it with lightly sauteed...
