How do you cook your pork chops?

I have some currant jelly that I got to make a rhubarb cake and was thinking about using it with the excessive amounts of pork chops I got (BOGO packs). I was thinking about mixing it with water (and maybe raisins, but that might be too much, I don't know) and using it as...not sure of the...

Do you ever cook an entree and a dessert in the oven together?

The electric bill was a quite a shocker when I started cooking and baking. People say it's cheaper to make your own food, but between buying ingredients and the electric Bill, I'm not so sure. I'm knocking myself out trying to maximize my usage in a big way! I even stagger my dough making so...

At what point can you claim a recipe as 'Your Own'?

I wasn't thinking about posting here. I was just thinking "In general" and for your own knowledge. "When do I get to have pride of ownership?" kind of thing. :) I promise to not post any recipes that could get anyone in trouble. :) I read Alton Brown's "I'm Just Here For More Food" and he...

    Hello from a new cook

Thank you! Lots of good ideas there!! You really are an  See, OP? They know EVERYTHING here. Sometimes I just sit and read and read...thinking, "He's much better than me. I can't do that yet," and "Oh, excellent idea!" I take notes, etc. :)

At what point can you claim a recipe as 'Your Own'?

I'm sure lawyers have their own definition, but I figure that when your cross outs, arrows and notes in the cookbook become too messy to follow, prompting you to whip out a card and write it down so that you can keep it straight...it's yours. :)

Artists Cut Raw Food Into 98 Perfect Cubes To Make Perfectionists Hungry

That is very cool and I'd love to hang it! A year ago today, those little foreign cubes would've stumped me across the board, so I'm especially happy about getting most of them as I puzzled them out. Gotta wonder how many things they cut up and how long that took.

    Something sticky for granola...

I've been making this granola that has oats, wheat germ, nuts and assorted dried fruits with some vegetable oil, honey and vanilla. It can be baked in mini muffin cups and comes out as a mini-chunk, but the second you bite into it (or even if it's handled without care), it crumbles. Is there...

Creating variety: How do you spice up your oatmeal?

Honey and dried, plump fruits, like cherries, Craisins and golden raisins. Though I like brown sugar and...well, pretty much any kind of syrup, they don't do it for me in oatmeal. Only honey and letting it sit for a bit does the trick. :)

    Hello from a new cook

Hi from another newbie. I bet I've messed up more stuff than you! It's so fun, though, when you try something and get it right!! I once thought that if you wanted good food, you had to eat out. Now, I'm all, "Look at me! This is better than any I've had before!" :chef: Well...

Hostess Cup Cakes Limited Edition Sea Salted Caramel review....

If you want boxed, pre-packaged cupcakes, the Little Debbie* ones are 10,000 times better than the Hostess ones. If that came off like I'm trying to be a smarmy, I'm Too Good For Boxed Food kind of person, I'm so not. I like the Little Debbie cupcakes. I hope to one day make some I like...

    Freezing bread...

I'd love to freeze half-loaves because I usually don't get all the way through a loaf before it begins to stale and end up eating bread when I don't want it, just to use it up. I figured you had to freeze it whole or nothing. I'm going to do the Half-loaf thing, for sure. Overly cautious vs...

    Freezing bread...

Okay! Freezer bag shopping I will be! I hadn't thought of thawing wrapped vs unwrapped. Excellent add-on advice. Thank you so much. :)

Refrigerator Stopped working then started again Question

I woke up to a big puddle of water on the floor, fridge just wasn't running. As I was dumping everything down the drain, the thing kicked back on. I called a repair guy and he said that a lot of times, that problem is a faulty thermostat, but my problem was...blah, blah, blah...gotta get a new...

    Freezing bread...

When you bake bread and want to freeze a loaf, do you pop it straight into the freezer while it's warm or do you wait until it's completely cooled? I'm thinking that when it's warm, there might be more water in there that would lead to freezer burn, but also have this urge to freeze it...

Who are your favorite TV chefs?

I prefer shows that are more about the cooking than the person doing it or cool camera angles of things being chopped or tossed. Alton Brown teaches How-Tos and instructs. He's also interesting and funny, which is a nice bonus (!), but when I watch Alton, I get what I came for: How To Make...

America's Best Cities for Food Snobs ~ Travel & Leisure Magazine

I wouldn't have guessed the Twin Cities and Cleveland to beat New York. I thought foodies loved New York to death! That's great, though. :) None near me. C'est la vie.

    Left over nellies

I aim for two, but will go three. After that, it's unlikely. If I've been eating it for three days, I'm so sick of it that it's not heartbreaking to dump.

    Beginner's guide to cooking

In the event that the OP comes back, I'm new, too. Much older, but learning. I so agree with the person who said to just make food and remember that if you need to, you can eat something else. So far, I've made exactly one thing that I couldn't eat. LOTS of mistakes, but most were still okay...

Can I make stock in my Dutch oven?

Hope you see this. I made those beans and they were good! I went with pink beans because I never had those before and I couldn't find Mesquite Liquid Smoke, so I used the one with the logs on the front. Seemed as mesquitey as I could get. I found out that my stove sucks. The burners can't...

Beware of recipes on the Internet

Being new at all this, I've had much more success with cookbook recipes than the ones I find online. I have no grand desire to pay for things I can get for free, so online recipes - I was all about them. When it doesn't work out, though, I can't be sure if it was me or the recipe, so I'm...

    Would You?

I probably wouldn't. I've always adhered to those dates very strictly. But I was reading about this just the other day and it seems that we don't risk much by using things past their date, so maybe it's a good idea. :)

What Cooking Tools Have Changed Your Life In The Kitchen?

All of it, really. But the knife/cutting board has to be the first and biggest. It opened up the world of fresh foods. The food processor is wonderful and lets me do all kinds of things I couldn't without it. The microplane is wonderful. (Whisks are my favorite item, though.) For...

    Flour vs. Flour

Thanks, everyone! This board is so helpful! I have a sieve and will use that for sifting. One less thing to buy and yay that. Sieve cleaning is easier than FP cleaning. FPs would be much handier if they weren't a pain to clean. I'm still doing things myself that I thought I'd let it do...

Can I make stock in my Dutch oven?

It's like you read my mind. Last night, I was googling and looking in books recipes for baked beans! I'm going to make this. Have to get molasses. Before I'm done, I'm going to know where everything is in the grocery store. :) Thank you!

Can I make stock in my Dutch oven?

There is something really fun about taking ingredients, none of which you'd want to sit down and eat a plate of on their own, and making them into something that is good. Then, making it again, but better. Tweaking it until you really like it a lot. It's fun to try new spices, too. I...
