My kid is going to Europe without me

She will have a wonderful time Mugbug, truly wonderful. For you to be sending her off at a young age is one of the best things you could do for her. It is so easy to think of our "own" country as 'the' country is a mistake so often made. I took my son a couple of years ago, or he took me:)...

It was a fine race. The Japanese have really made their mark. Good for them. Those horses are just beautivul, all of them.

    Vegemite banned

Vegemite is my choice every time. To use it don't spread, dab. Thick toast with butter melting into it, then just dab a little here and there. Heaven. A sandy, dabbed with vegemite, and lots iceburg lettuce. Paradise. A bit in the gravy, a bit in the meatballs, a bit in the cottage pie...

    Shepherd's Pie Topping

Now Thats clever Vera. I quite like the idea of mashed pumpkin or Kumara. (sweet potato). Or a medley of mashed stuff, pumpkin, kumara, turnip, parsnip etc. It could be quite fun to line the dish with sliced taties.

    Washing Chicken

Come to think of it, I wouldn't use the lettuce washing water to wash chicken either. LOL

    Washing Chicken

I will still wash my chickens. I don't like pink water either. It isn't as if you are rubbing the bird all over your benches and sinks and cupboards. I think it can be a very neat operation. Nobody is going to wash the lettuce in the water used. If chicken was so unspeakably dangerous none...

    DS is leaving today

My mother didn't even wave goodbye when I went to Australia, but I saw my eldest son off to Europe and the US in the cold grey light of dawn when he was 19 years old. He was alone and backpacking, and was away for months, and that is why I learned to use a computer. Then it was Asia, then...

    Why dogs bite people

My affenpinscher would make a lovely spider, all I have ever put her in is a stretch and grow suit. She loved herself.

Small plane crashes into NY highrise

yes, they spend much time trying to break our hearts, quite forgetting real people are really getting killed, and who have real relatives and friends who are really grieving. I will never forget the story of a mother who was watching her daughter struggling in the Potomac. Mum was on her knees...

    Not the best restaurant experience

I have read this thread with much interest. Real estate agents get a % of the selling price, as the housing price goes up, so do the %ages. Every person in this country gets paid a minimum wage. Any tipping is considered icing. We don't tip the pharmacy assistant, the dr. the nurse. We...

    Dining Pet Peeves

Yes Marishka, I think a nice touch after too long a wait, is to rise and leave when you see your meal coming out the swing door. My daughter and I went to a Pizza Hutt in Whangarei once, we didn't know the teachers were on strike. The place was a bomb site, every table littered with dining...

    Haircuts

I am very grey now, and wouldn't dream of a colour. I do envy those with a bit of wave in their hair, I think it is so pretty.

    Do you grind your teeth?

TMJ upsets are no joke, and they can go on to Trigeminal Neuralgia. The treatment for TN used to be dividing the 7th cranial nerve and injecting it with alcohol. What it is now I do not know, but I am inclined to do what the people above said.

    Garden Stuffed Baked Potatoes

Thank you for starting this thread PAbaker. You are so right about stuffing potatoes. I normally stuff them with very finely chopped onion and a sharp cheese. Cream, butter and so on. Also I cut a rim, about 2/3rds the way up. They rise slightly from the 'tato, and make taking the tops off...

    ISO Intro to Tofu

Did you tell her to 'shut the rude word up'. She could get her own basket. I really can't stand it when the latest fad is visited on us. Although I always enjoyed my sisters cooking when she was going through her vegetarian phase.

    ISO Intro to Tofu

Interesting discussion. I have had tofu at a Thai resto. I think it was deep fried, and had no discernable taste, but the texture was brilliant. It was very crunchy, and I loved it. It was crunchy all the way thru. I have no idea how to prepare this offering, and hope someone can tell me. I...

    Rachael Ray's cookware

I do buy cookware one piece at a time. And choose those pieces with great care. Although I love my 3 LCs (2 cass with lids and 1 large pan with lid), I can only comfortably use the smaller cass. because of the weight. DH has to heft the other pieces for me. I mostly use the s/s pots I have...

Good wines now come with screw caps, pop tops and paper "bottles"

We don't buy anything with a cork anymore. I love the screwcaps. They have been in NZ for ages. Even I can open them. I guess that is why I drive a car, not a horse and buggy.

    Full Moon EEK!

I got out Hubbys telescope, gazed thru it diligently, at the moon. And couldn't see one person I knew. I thought Neil Armstrong had a holiday home up there.
