he took the name from his work as a licensed Mississippi riverboat pilot.
"mark twain" is a call used to sound river shallows. a length of twine,
knotted every six feet, with a weight on the end, was used.
each time a depth measurement was taken, the pilot would call out the "mark
on the twine", which was shortened to "mark twine"
and pronounced "mark twain", and then the depth.
