Helen was one of my mom's girlfriends. May she rest in peace and live on in her wonderful family recipes.
Helen Savren's Dio's-lekv'aros Szelet (Hungarian pastry)
Ingredients:
6 cups flour
1 cup sugar
4 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 lb. sweet butter (two sticks)
2 Tbsp. shortening
4 egg yolks
1/2 pint sour cream
1 tsp vanilla
pinch salt
2-1/2 cups ground walnuts
1/2 cup sugar
jam, lekv'ar or apricot
Directions:
Sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Add shortening and butter; add egg yolks, sour cream and vanilla. Mix ground nuts and 1/2 c sugar and set aside. Divide dough into three portions. Roll out first as layer as for pie; place in bottom of pan. Spread with jam, then second layer of dough, nuts and sugar mixture. Roll out third layer; cut into strips and place on top form of lattice work. Bake for 25 minutes at 350 degrees.
