Vegetarian Low Fat Diet...

The friendliest place on the web for anyone that enjoys cooking.
If you have answers, please help by responding to the unanswered posts.
Shell fish have no nervous system, and they cant feel pain.

I don't know where you came up with that idea, but it's definitely not true. While I'm not intimately familiar with the anatomy of clams, mussels, scallops, etc., they do respond to touch. As for shrimp, crab, & lobster - they DEFINITELY have excellent well-documented nervous systems.

If you understandably enjoy eating shellfish, so be it. But please don't do so & call yourself "vegetarian" because you erroneously believe they're creatures without feeling.

Hi Merstar, sorry about how I typed it (had a lot to type) but yes it's 1.5 tsps of cumin and 1.5 tsp of corrainder. Also I only use whole spices. I like to toast them and then grind them. The flavors when you roast whole spices and grind them are just different than the powdered stuff.

For anyone else who wants to try that recipe and are not that considered about spices and fat you can use regular fat yogurt, the best is greek or middleeastern. I would also suggest adding a chopped jalapeno pepper at the end with the green onion and cilantro for some kick. I would also add some minced ginger to the mixture.

The recipe I posted is slightly modified keeping that there is a restriction on fat and spices.

Thanks, Yakuta!

Agreed. A person who eats fish and no other meat is a pescatarian. Avoiding other kinds of meat is still better for the environment. It still contributes less to cruelty. It's just not vegetarian. And telling others that you are when you eat fish perpetuates a misconception.

Whoa...i didnt think people were going to freak out if i said i eat shellfish. And ok maybe they have a nervous system, but they cant feel pain and they arent aware of being. Unless some one lied to me...but i honestly dont find it in the character of that person to do so. Im going to change the subject now.

Any more recipes? Im making the potatoe one tonight and the cous cous one tomorrow or the next day.

Like I said before, you might want to do your own research on this. There are plenty of scientists and animal rights advocates that claim they do feel pain and are aware of being .

And do look up a chart so you can start eating bananas.

I looked, but my moms doctor said not to eat bananas. I dont know why, maybe its the type of fat. Like, she can eat coconuts even though they are high in fat. Its because its a different kind.

If you are serious about your diet and you and your mom's health, IMO it would be a good idea to learn a lot more about nutrition.

Bananas are NOT high in fat. They are very low in fat. They are high in certain minerals, like potassium, which is good for some people and bad for others. I doubt your doctor told you mom not to eat bananas because of their fat content or fat type. You also might consider getting some more information and guidance from you mom's doctor so you better understand her diet restrictions.

There are tons of resources out there that can bring you up to speed on nutritional basics pretty fast. Being more informed will help you make better food choices.

Hmm well I just asked my mom and she said avacados and bananas but whatever. I have had a lot of people tell me that.

Hi. As jennyema said, you might want to do your own research rather than rely on what people tell you. Here's a great site for nutrition info: The World's Healthiest Foods.

The page on bananas doesn't mention fat at all: WHFoods: Bananas The page on almonds talks about how they're high in fat, but it's a healthy type of fat: WHFoods: Almonds (I only mention that to illustrate that the site does talk about fats, when they're relevant.)

Here's another good site for nutrition info: Nutrition Facts and Analysis for Bananas, raw

The info there is from the USDA's National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference. HTH.

Dr. Dean Ornish advocates an extremely low-fat vegetarian diet and has written several books on the subject. However, I haven't read any of his books and some regard his recommendations as too extreme.

I beg to differ with your assessment of Dr. Ornish. To the scientific medical and dietetic community he is held in high regard. His recommendations may be difficult to follow, but his recommendations are based on sound research. He has been published numerous times in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association. Here is a link regarding one of his articles which is also the website of the ADA.

I love shakes. Filling and full of flavor. I put in a Slim fast so I know I'm getting
all the required vitamins and then add banana and ice. So great for an early
dinner so you don't eat too late and feel full while sleeping.

Does anyone know why white bread makes me feel tired?
My theory is that water, flour mixed makes paste.
Hence, the stuck feeling? Funny but true.

White bread and sugar are simple carbs. The break down quickly, stimulate digestion, and provide a quick burst of energy. Protein and fat digest slower and regulate blood sugar (no quick spikes). That's my best nowhere-close-to-professional answer. Welcome to DC BTW.
