Tools for spreading crepe batter come in two types: those with a dowel end (like a croquet mallet) and those with a flat end (like a hoe). Which is better? Easier to use? Easier to learn to use?

I don't use a tool. I just tilt the pan and the batter runs around it.
Is that the only pan you own?The pan I use does not have a handle. (It's a 14" steel tortilla pan; all it has is a loop to hang.)

I never knew that a tool existed for spreading crepe batter!
I think you could probably improvise using the side of a pancake turner/ spatula.
