Another thought regarding the snail problem -
Copper gives them an electrical shock. Most nurseries carry copper tape, which is as easy to affix to your pots as packaging tape. The little buggers hate it. If you are growing your herbs in the ground, put a few concentric circles of pennies around each plant. That should give them enough reason to leave the plants alone. (Remember that you can also sprinkle salt in the area to really get rid of them!)
 
I think so, or at least that's what I've read in 3 of my gardening books....
I have used the pennies, but it's been at least 5 years - all my herbs (except my lemon balm) are all in big containers rather than in the ground, so I use copper tape.
hmmm....that just gave me an idea! I've also got lots of copper tubing I use for crafts...I bet some tubing could be formed into a circle and put at the base of the plant!

The rule of thumb is (but dosent always apply) big leaf = shade and moisture wile small leaf = sunny and moist to drought resistant...
